Chapter 5
Winter grew colder. With each heavy snowfall, Rebecca’s health deteriorated.,
Vincent hadn’t returned since he left last time.
On Rebecca’s birthday, Susan posted an ultrasound photo in the family chat group. Twins were wonderful news. Ev- eryone congratulated her. Praise for Susan poured in nonstop.
Nicole saw Rebecca staring intently at her phone, looking unwell. She stepped forward to comfort her, “Ma’am, today is your birthday. Vincent always makes time no matter how busy he is every year. He will definitely come back to- day.”
Rebecca turned off her phone. She pressed a hand tightly against her chest, swallowing back a sudden wave of nau- sea. A bitter smile touched her lips. “He won’t remember me.”
Rebecca stood up. She looked around the cold, empty villa, feeling even colder. She wrapped her shawl tighter and said softly, “Nicole, I miss home.”
Rebecca and Nicole drove to the White family estate. They saw a noisy crowd standing at the gate.
Nicole ran up and grabbed a middle-aged woman who looked furious. She asked urgently, “What’s going on?”
The middle-aged woman, seeing Nicole was well-dressed, thought she was also a resident. She pointed at the villa and said in a shrill voice, “Kid in that house is crazy! Who knows if he’ll hurt our children? For the safety of our com- munity, we demand they send that brat to the asylum!”
Nicole paled instantly, blurting out, “That’s absurd! Patrick’s perfectly fine-he’s not sick!”
The middle-aged woman shoved her phone forward, showing a viral video. “See? He nearly made that actress miscar- ry! School security footage doesn’t lie!”
Rebecca, standing behind Nicole, turned deathly pale. Trembling with rage, she pushed through the crowd to the doorway, eyes bloodshot. “Get out! Now! Leave or I’ll call the cops for trespassing!”
The woman sneered, voice coarse, “We’re not leaving till that little psycho’s locked up!” She hurled an egg at Rebec-
Nicole exploded, shoving the woman aside and shielding Rebecca with outstretched arms. Veins bulged at her tem- ples as her voice cracked like a whip. “Try me! I’ve had enough of this life! Haunt you all in my next one!”
The crowd exchanged uneasy glances before slinking away from the feral old woman.
The villa entrance was covered in broken eggs and rotten vegetable leaves.
Rebecca paid no mind to her soiled clothes and shoes, pushing the door open and rushing inside. “Angela, Patrick, are you both alright?”

Hearing faint noises from the upstairs bedroom, Rebecca hurried up the stairs.
She pushed the door open and saw Angela standing with her back turned. Tentatively, she called out, “Angela?” Angela paused, then slowly turned around, revealing a face beaten to a pulp, bruised purple and blue. Rebecca’s pupils contracted, her eyes instantly reddening as she ran over, voice trembling: “Angela, what happened to you?”
Wiping blood from her lip with a bitter smile, Angela said, “No school will accept Patrick. When I brought him home, residents came mobbing us, demanding he be sent to a mental hospital. I refused…”
“So they beat you?” Rebecca pressed urgently. “Angela, where’s Patrick?”
At the mention of Patrick, Angela could no longer hold back. Tears streamed down as she choked out, “He’s sleep- ing.”
In just a few days, the little boy had thinned out considerably, scratches marking his face. His tightly shut eyes still held teardrops clinging to the corners.
Curled up on the bed, he frowned tightly, restless even in sleep.
Rebecca stepped forward, gently touching his hair as tears welled up involuntarily.
After leaving Patrick’s room, Rebecca appeared much calmer. Holding Angela’s hand, she said, “Let Nicole stay to look after you. I’m going to find Vincent.”
Angela wiped her tears, her face drawn with exhaustion. She looked at Rebecca as if wanting to speak but stopped
