What?!
Getting married?!
Evan Dale’s eyes went wide as saucers, his gaze snapping over to Olivia Bennett, pure shock written all over his face.
They’d barely talked for, what, two minutes? And now they were off to get married?
But Ethan Carter didn’t even spare him a glance. He just took Olivia’s hand and walked out, leaving Evan standing there frozen.
Evan was so stunned, he stayed rooted in place long after the two of them had disappeared from sight. Was he hearing things? Did they really just go to get married?
His mind still spinning, Evan headed off to pick up the chicken noodle soup Lily George had asked for, then made his way back to the hospital room.
Inside, Adelina Lane was chatting with Lily, but when she saw Evan come back alone, she looked up. “Where’s Ethan?”
Evan hesitated, struggling to wrap his mind around what was happening. “Mr. Carter, he… uh…”
Adelina arched a perfectly shaped eyebrow, her tone dry and knowing, as if she already had the answer. “Let me guess. Off working again?”
Lily sighed and chimed in, “Evan, you really should tell him to take it easy. He’s been working nonstop for a month! The Carter Group isn’t going to collapse if he takes a day off.”
“No, it’s not that. Mr. Carter didn’t go to the office. He…”
Evan took a deep breath. “He went to get a license.”
There was a beat of silence. It should have been a bombshell, but it landed with a thud, barely making a ripple.
Adelina let out a short, incredulous laugh. “What, like an ‘Employee of the Month’ certificate?”
Evan actually considered agreeing—at least that sounded more believable.
He’d done his part—now it was up to Mr. Carter to explain himself.
Meanwhile, in the car, Ethan asked Olivia for her address and started driving toward her place.
When they got there, Olivia grabbed her passport from inside, but as she closed the door, she hesitated. She bit her lip, looking uncertain. “Maybe… maybe we shouldn’t do this.”
Ethan glanced down at her, his gaze intense, like he could see right through her.
Olivia gave a nervous laugh, clutching her passport. “I’m not as uncomplicated as you think. Marrying me could cause you a lot of trouble—I don’t want to drag you into my mess.”
That morning, Daniel Gill had already forced her to shut down her studio. If he found out she’d married Ethan Carter, he’d stop at nothing to make trouble for him, too.
Looking back, she realized she’d agreed too hastily. Maybe this wasn’t such a good idea after all.
