Four envelopes sat on the table—bright, shiny, and definitely not the kind you’d find cash in. Olivia Bennett picked one up and peeked inside. Instead of bills, there was just a single, paper-thin slip—actually, four different bank cards, neatly stacked.
She didn’t need to guess. There was only one thing these cards would be loaded with: lots and lots of money.
She looked up at Ethan Carter, eyebrow raised. “Isn’t this… a bit much?”
Ethan flopped down next to her on the couch. “Trust me, if there’s one thing my family has too much of, it’s money. They want you to have it, so just take it.”
Olivia grinned. “Is everyone in your family this generous, or is it just you?”
Ethan thought for a second, then shrugged. “Give it time. You’ll be talking like this soon enough.”
She nodded, pretending to think it over. “Maybe I’ll try it out next time. After all, I’m rich now, aren’t I?”
She waved the envelope in the air with a little flourish, acting the part of a newly minted millionaire.
Ethan gave her a crooked smile. “Why not start now?”
“Now?”
He nodded again.
Olivia paused, then pulled out one of the cards and handed it to him. “Alright then. Here—go fetch me some pajamas.”
Ethan raised an eyebrow. “You’re giving me a whole bank card just for pajamas?”
She shrugged, waving the card around as if it barely mattered. “What else am I supposed to give you? All I’ve got are bank cards.”
Ethan played along perfectly, standing up. “Alright, your wish is my command.”
He disappeared into the walk-in closet.
Olivia blinked, amused at how seriously he was taking her little act. In no time, Ethan reemerged with a soft cotton nightgown.
He held it out to her. “Will this do?”
She nodded and handed him the card.
He made no move to take it. “You’re seriously giving this to me?”
She just smiled, not answering.
