“He just up and got married out of nowhere—no way they’re that close yet. And that girl, she’s not exactly some high-society debutante. Her family’s got nothing on the Carters. I honestly don’t see this lasting,” Shirley Carter mused out loud, her fingers drumming the steering wheel as the car cruised through the leafy suburbs.
“Ethan Carter’s always been the quiet, distant type. I’ve never seen him show the slightest interest in any woman. Marrying her? Probably just a phase, maybe even something to appease his parents. I doubt it’s love. At most, it’s just curiosity,” she went on, glancing at Catherine Blair in the passenger seat.
Truth be told, Shirley found Ethan’s brother, Lance Carter, way more approachable. Ethan? He was like a closed book.
She’d paid close attention to Olivia Bennett at the brunch earlier. Other than a pretty face and a timid way of sitting there like she was afraid to touch the silverware, the girl screamed small-town. Nothing special, really.
Catherine blinked, “You mean to say...”
Shirley pressed her lips together, thinking. “If you really like him, just wait. There’s no rush. Honestly, I’d put money on them divorcing sooner or later.”
She turned to Catherine, her tone serious. “But you need to give him a reason to notice you. Right now, you’re practically invisible to him, and that won’t change just because I try to set you up down the line. If he doesn’t remember you, there’s nothing I can do.”
Catherine’s fists clenched in her lap. She knew Shirley was right.
She’d been over to the Carters’ place before, and Ethan had even helped her out once. But when they met again, he looked at her like she was a complete stranger.
Sensing Catherine’s doubt, Shirley’s eyes narrowed thoughtfully before she added, “If you want something, you have to think it through. Sometimes, a little scheming is nothing to be ashamed of. Missing out and regretting it for the rest of your life—that’s the real tragedy.”
She smirked, just a hint of a smile tugging at her lips.
Catherine’s resolve hardened. She nodded. “I get it, Shirley.”
She was still young—she could wait. If Ethan didn’t remember her, she’d just have to make herself unforgettable.
