From a Wrong Turn to Mr. Right novel Chapter 13

Olivia Bennett blinked awake, her mind foggy, and the first thing she saw was Ethan Carter’s face hovering above her. Before she could even piece together where she was, his deep, reassuring voice slipped into her ears.

“It’s okay. Let me carry you to bed—you’ll feel much better.”

His words washed over her, and she couldn’t help but let her heavy eyelids fall shut again.

Ethan gently tucked her in, pulled the comforter up to her chin, and left the room as quietly as possible, closing the door behind him. He grabbed his phone and dialed a number.

“Find out everything you can about Olivia Bennett.”

There was a pause on the other end. “Olivia Bennett? Who’s that?”

“My wife.”

“Your— Oh. Right. Got it. I’m on it.”

Evan Dale hung up, eyes wide in surprise.

Olivia, huh… He almost forgot Mr. Carter wasn’t a lone wolf anymore. Still, the way he’d call her, so casually and intimately, was new.

Ten minutes later.

Ethan scrolled through the dossier Evan had just sent him, his expression growing darker with every line he read.

He shut his laptop with a snap, bracing his hands on the desk. His sharp, steel-blue eyes hardened, shadowed by a cold, dangerous glint.

The details were all there in black and white.

Olivia’s longtime boyfriend had gotten tangled up with her own sister, Lavinia. If that wasn’t bad enough, Daniel Gill seemed to be going out of his way to make Olivia’s life miserable—maybe to impress Lavinia, or maybe he just couldn’t stand to see Olivia happy.

One by one, the staff at her photography studio had left over the past month.

“…Excuse me?” Evan stammered, thinking he must’ve misheard.

He’d been bracing himself for a grilling about business, not… this. It was like being told to suit up for battle, only to be asked for advice on how to fry an egg.

But then he remembered Olivia practically passing out at the restaurant earlier. It made sense.

Clearing his throat, Evan went into full-on dad mode. “Morning sickness is totally normal. You can’t cure it, just make it easier. Keep some salty crackers or ginger candies handy—those help a lot. Make sure she eats small, light meals, nothing too greasy or heavy.”

He kept going, voice earnest. “Pregnant women can get moody—just go with the flow, keep things upbeat, and never, ever argue. Seriously, don’t pick a fight, you’ll lose. After meals, go for a walk together—it helps.”

He rattled off a dozen more tips, clearly speaking from experience.

Ethan leaned back in his chair, fingers drumming on the desk. He listened intently, mentally filing everything away. When Evan finally finished, Ethan just said a quiet, “Got it.”

Evan, on the other end, could only stare at his phone in disbelief.
