Her attitude now was the complete opposite of when she’d just been talking to Olivia. It was like night and day.
Guess it’s true—you can always tell who someone loves, and who they don’t.
Ethan Carter’s face was unreadable. “What is it?”
Catherine Blair snapped out of her daze, bobbing her head quickly as she held out a folder. “I just came to drop off some paperwork for you.”
Ethan’s sharp gaze flicked over the words “Marketing Department” on the cover. “Marketing?”
“Yes!” Catherine nodded so hard her ponytail bounced, her cheeks flushing pink. She beamed. “I interviewed at Carter Group a couple days ago, and now I’m working in Marketing. The department head asked me to give you these.”
Ethan’s dark eyes flickered—just barely. His voice was ice-cold. “Leave it on the desk.”
“Okay!” Catherine rushed over to the big mahogany desk and set the folder down, then lingered, watching him.
Ethan’s brows drew together. “Is there something else?”
Catherine froze, the smile fading from her face. She shook her head, lips pressed tight. “No, that’s all.”
“You can go now.”
His tone was frigid, not a hint of warmth. He didn’t even glance her way.
Catherine’s heart sank. She looked at him for a long moment, biting her lip.
“Well… I’ll go then, Ethan.”
She hated to leave, but at least she’d seen him today. And now that she was actually working at Carter Group, she’d have more chances to bump into him. Maybe, someday, she’d finally win some points in his heart.
The hope made her feel a little better. She turned to leave.
“Wait.”
Ethan’s voice stopped her mid-step. She spun around, hope lighting up her face. “Ethan, what is it?”
“From now on, call me Mr. Carter.”
