“What the hell do you guys think you’re doing?!”
The shout cracked through the tension in the room, and in a flash, a woman’s figure stepped right between Olivia Bennett and Lavinia Bennett.
Her eyes narrowed, blazing with fury as she glared at Lavinia. Her stare was sharp as a knife, sending chills around the room.
“Nannie Bruce?” Daniel Gill’s voice wavered with surprise.
“Oh, spare me the pleasantries, Daniel.” Nannie Bruce shot him a look so scathing it could curdle milk. “Don’t you dare call me that.”
Olivia, stunned for a moment, blinked as recognition set in. A small, relieved smile tugged at her lips. “Nannie…”
Nannie Bruce moved beside her, her gaze softening as she looked Olivia up and down with real concern. “Don’t worry, sweetheart. I’m here now. These two cheaters aren’t laying a finger on you.”
Lavinia’s brows drew together, her face flushing with anger. “That’s really uncalled for, don’t you think?”
Never in her life had anyone spoken to her like that. It was nearly enough to make her lose her cool completely.
Nannie Bruce just snorted, crossing her arms. “Oh, really? Calling you cheaters is uncalled for? Honey, there’s worse I could say.”
“You—!” Lavinia’s composure cracked, and for a second, she looked ready to hurl an insult right back.
