Olivia let out a surprised little gasp. "What did you say?"
Ethan’s gaze met hers, deep and steady. "You really don’t have anything you want to say?"
Her mind spun for a moment before she glanced up at him, her brown eyes still hazy with sleep. "Well… have a safe trip, then."
Her eyes were beautiful, almost sleepy and confused, like she hadn’t quite woken up yet.
Ethan felt a strange tightness in his chest. He gave her shoulder a gentle pat. "Go back to sleep."
She made a soft sound of agreement and closed her eyes almost instantly.
For a while, Ethan thought she’d already drifted off. But then her voice floated out quietly, threading softly through the darkness between them. "I’ll wait for you to come back."
Just five simple words, but they hit Ethan like a punch to the gut. Something nameless and warm started to bloom in his chest.
He reached out and tipped her chin up, not hesitating as he kissed her.
This time, the kiss was nothing like the gentle ones they’d shared in the garage. It was more intense, almost desperate, as if he wanted to hold her so close she became part of him.
Whatever sleepiness Olivia had left was gone in a heartbeat. The air felt thin, her head a little dizzy.
She only snapped out of it when something felt different. Her eyes cleared, and she pushed at Ethan’s chest, her voice shaky. "Wait, what are you—"
She stopped, wide-eyed, as if she’d just discovered something earth-shattering.
Ethan took a shaky breath, steadying himself before wrapping her in his arms. "Olivia, I’m a normal guy, you know."
She blinked, caught off guard.
Of course she knew that. After all, she was pregnant with his baby. But after sharing a bed for so long without anything like this ever happening, she’d almost started to forget.
She practically wore her shock on her face. Ethan reached out, brushing a few messy strands of hair behind her ear, his voice low. "I held back before."
Even if he felt something, he’d always made sure she never noticed. Otherwise, how could he sleep next to her every night and wake up with her in his arms, and nothing ever happen? That would’ve been the real miracle.
It wasn’t like Olivia was shocked for long. After all, this was only natural.
