From a Wrong Turn to Mr. Right novel Chapter 177

Of course.

There were so many people at this party, everyone was busy chatting, barely keeping up with their own conversations—why would anyone bother paying attention to them?

Besides, it wasn’t like they were making a huge scene.

What could possibly go wrong?

She was just being silly, letting Olivia Bennett get under her skin like that.

Claire Camp let out a breath, shot Olivia a sideways glance, and smirked. “Are you threatening me?”

Her eyes raked up and down Olivia’s outfit. “If anyone should be worried about drawing attention, it’s you. I mean, look at yourself—what are you even wearing? Couldn’t scrounge up the cash for a halfway decent dress? Or did you just wander in from the street?”

She leaned in, voice dripping with suspicion. “Wait a second. Are you even on the guest list? Or did you just sneak in here?”

The more Claire looked at her, the more convinced she was.

With Olivia’s background, there was no way she’d been actually invited to the Bakers’ annual summer soiree.

And now she was sitting alone in the corner, not even trying to mingle, wearing what looked like a thrift store find. Other than that guy who’d been talking to her earlier, she hadn’t spoken to a soul.

Honestly, she looked more like an uninvited guest than anything else.

But Olivia didn’t look the least bit bothered. She just sat there, meeting Claire’s glare, and finally spoke, her voice calm and almost amused. “Last I checked, this was the Baker Family’s party, not the Camp’s. How I got here isn’t really any of your business, is it?”

Claire bristled, momentarily at a loss for words.

She was now absolutely sure Olivia had crashed the party.

Claire narrowed her eyes. “I just can’t stand girls like you—always thinking you deserve what you obviously can’t have.”

She gestured broadly around the room, filled with people in cocktail dresses and tuxes, glasses of champagne in hand. “Look around. No one’s talking to you. Do you really think you fit in here? Even if you snuck in, all you can do is lurk in this dingy corner. You know what they say—a duckling might wander into a flock of swans, but it’s never going to become one.”

Claire crossed her arms, chin tilted high. “People need to know their place. Otherwise, you’re just a joke to everyone else.”

Olivia didn’t so much as flinch. She gave Claire a slow once-over, then her lips curled into a little smile.
