From a Wrong Turn to Mr. Right novel Chapter 23

Although the initial rejection stung a bit, the words “let’s get married” still put a big smile on Lavinia Bennett’s face.

She quickly got over it, grabbed the women’s ring, and slipped it onto her finger, admiring the way it sparkled.

Daniel Gill glanced down, his expression unreadable as he took the ring back and handed it to the sales clerk to box up. He slid his credit card across the counter.

The clerk took the card and tried not to stare. There was just something odd about this couple.

Sure, the guy was gentle and attentive, but for some reason, she couldn’t shake the feeling that his warmth didn’t quite reach his eyes.

Probably just her imagination.

Maybe this was simply how their relationship worked; after all, she’d misread things before. She really needed to break her habit of over-analyzing customers.

Shaking the thought from her head, the clerk quickly ran the card, boxed up the ring, and handed it to Daniel with a polite smile.

Once outside the store, Daniel stopped abruptly. He looked apologetically at Lavinia. “Lavinia, I…”

She rolled her eyes, puffing her cheeks in mock annoyance. “I get it. The Carter Group is important. Go on, then.” She mumbled, “If I’d known it’d be like this, I never would’ve helped you get into the Carter Group in the first place…”

Daniel’s eyes darkened for a split second, a shadow flickering across his face.

But just as quickly, a smile reappeared. He reached out, cupping her cheek. “Don’t be mad. I’m doing all this for us. I want to give you a better life once we’re married.”

His eyes crinkled with affection, so convincing that anyone watching would see only a devoted fiancé.

Lavinia let out a sigh, accepting his explanation. She rose on tiptoe and kissed him on the corner of his mouth. “Fine. But you have to make it up to me later.”

“Of course,” he replied softly, nodding.

He watched her walk away, then lifted his sleeve to wipe the spot she’d kissed, his eyes icy and cold.

Daniel didn’t actually head to the Carter Group like he’d said. Instead, he made his way to Olivia Bennett’s place.

Daniel’s voice, tense and a little too demanding, crackled through the line.

So he’d been to her house. Olivia blinked, caught off guard. Daniel, not hearing an immediate answer, softened his tone, asking again—“Olivia, are you there? Can you hear me?”

She pressed a button and ended the call without a word.

Then, after a moment’s thought, she blocked the number.

Less than a minute later, her phone rang again. Another unknown number.

She answered, heard the first syllable of his voice, and hung up in one smooth motion—block, delete, done.

After everything she’d said yesterday, he still found so many ways to call her. Unbelievable.
