She was telling the truth.
Back in the day, Nannie Bruce had tried to teach her poker a few times, but Olivia had only picked up the basics. Nannie Bruce, on the other hand, was like some kind of card shark—once she sat down at the table, she almost never lost.
Every time, Olivia felt like her cards were completely transparent to Nannie Bruce.
“So you do know how to play, then.”
Olivia Bennett hesitated, “Sort of, I guess.”
“Good enough!” Elaine Carter grinned from ear to ear. “Let’s play poker! Me, Mom, Grandma, and you, Olivia—perfect number.”
Adelina Lane perked up. “Yeah, honestly, it’s hard to get a full table unless you’re here, Olivia.”
Lily George was already cracking her knuckles, clearly excited.
Olivia looked at the three of them, all fired up, and worried she’d be a party pooper. She tried to warn them, “I’m really not that good, though.”
“No worries at all,” Elaine waved her off. “It’s just family fun! I barely play, honestly.”
Adelina chimed in, “We only ever play when everyone’s home anyway. Really, Olivia, none of us are pros.”
Lily nodded, “Exactly! I haven’t played in a year, my hands are rusty. And now that you’re here, you can keep us company. Otherwise it’s just me and your mom staring at each other all day.”
With all three of them cajoling her, Olivia barely had time to think before she found herself at the table.
Lily even asked someone to fetch her reading glasses.
Elaine asked, “So, what’s the buy-in?”
Adelina said, “It’s just family, let’s keep it low stakes. How about ten bucks?”
Lily shrugged, “Sounds good to me.”
Olivia’s head was spinning. Ten bucks? For them, that was low?
She raised her hand cautiously, “Isn’t that a little much?”
