From a Wrong Turn to Mr. Right novel Chapter 240

Adelina Lane didn’t know exactly what had happened, but she could guess it had something to do with that toy. She took a breath, her tone steady. “That toy’s for your kid, right? He’s still at home waiting for you. If you don’t let go now, your kid might not see you tonight.”

His kid…

The man froze, staring at the battered toy on the ground. It was like he was waking up from a bad dream. His hand loosened from Daisy Dale’s neck.

Daisy stumbled, clutching her throat, but Adelina caught her before she fell.

“It’s over,” Adelina soothed, rubbing Daisy’s back gently.

Daisy clung to her, still coughing, tears streaming down her face.

The man sank to his knees, eyes locked on the broken toy car. He looked completely lost. Then, suddenly, tears welled in his eyes—big, silent tears, rolling down his cheeks and splattering on the cracked plastic.

Adelina knelt beside him. “It’s busted. You’ll just have to get another one.”

The man’s voice shook as he stared at her, holding the ruined toy. “Buy another one? You don’t get it. I borrowed money just to get this for him.”

He sniffled, wiping his face with a trembling hand. “My boy’s been sick since he was three. Doctor says he might not make it till Christmas. This—this is the only thing he’s ever wanted. I never had the money, but I finally scraped enough together, and now it’s ruined. I just wanted him to be happy, just once. To have something—something nice before…” His voice broke. “But to you, it’s just a piece of junk.”

“No, you’ve got it wrong,” Adelina said softly, her heart aching. “It’s not junk. We’re the ones who messed up.”

She took a deep breath and looked him right in the eye. “Let us make it right. I’ll go with you and buy a new one for your boy. Let’s not waste any more time—he’s probably still waiting for you.”

The man stared at her, hope flickering in his puffy eyes. “You mean it?”
