Damian Franklin gave her a reassuring nod. “No shots today, I promise. We’re just here to have some fun, not for any scary needles.”
Beatty shot him a suspicious glare. “Liar, Damian. You always say that.”
Damian looked a bit sheepish. He had tricked her once before to get her to the doctor, and apparently, she hadn’t forgotten—even after all this time.
Olivia Bennett laughed, grabbing Beatty’s hand. “No shots, I swear. Let’s go home.”
Beatty’s whole face lit up, nodding so hard her hair bounced. “Home! Olivia’s the best. I like Olivia. Damian’s mean. Damian’s always lying.”
Damian just sighed, a little wounded. Ouch.
Ethan Carter was waiting outside with the car. Olivia slid into the passenger seat, while Damian and Beatty climbed in the back.
Beatty couldn’t stop talking, chattering away to Olivia the whole ride. Olivia responded with endless patience, smiling at the little girl’s stories.
When Beatty tried to clamber forward to get closer, Damian gently pulled her back. “Hey, let’s wait until we’re home, okay? Don’t bother Olivia.”
Beatty looked from him to Olivia, eyes wide and contrite. “I’ll be quiet. I won’t bother Olivia.”
Olivia smiled at her in the mirror. “You can talk, sweetie. Just stay buckled up.”
Beatty immediately sat up straight, hands in her lap. “Okay! I won’t move.”
Damian let out a dramatic sigh. “You listen to her way better than you ever listen to me.”
If he raised his voice even a little, Beatty would pout and call him mean. But Olivia? She could say anything, and Beatty would behave like she’d just received royal orders.
Olivia glanced at Damian with a knowing smile. “She knows you’d never really leave her.”
That was the difference. With Damian, Beatty felt safe; she could push boundaries because she trusted him. With Olivia, everything was still a little new, and she didn’t want to mess it up.
Beatty lifted her chin proudly. “Damian would never leave me.”
