After breakfast, they both lounged around for a bit before finally heading out in the car.
They’d called ahead, so Damian Franklin was already waiting when they pulled up.
Olivia Bennett stepped out, eyeing him from across the driveway.
She wanted to call him “Mr. Franklin,” but that felt too stiff. She tried to say “Dad,” but the word caught in her throat, feeling foreign and heavy.
Her lips parted, but no sound came out.
Damian just smiled warmly at her. “Olivia, come on inside. It’s chilly out here. Beatty’s been wanting to run out and greet you since sunrise. I had to convince her to just wait inside.”
Olivia let out a quiet breath, all her nerves distilling into a simple, “Okay.”
Meanwhile, Ethan Carter was popping the trunk and unloading their stuff.
Damian noticed and went over to help him haul everything inside.
The house was cozy, and as soon as they walked in, Beatty—sitting on the couch—perked up at the sound of the door. When she saw who it was, her face lit up. “Olivia! You’re here!”
“Hi, Beatty,” Olivia replied, changing into her slippers before moving into the living room.
Damian and Ethan set the bags down.
“Why don’t you guys sit down? I’ll make some coffee,” Damian offered.
“I’m good, actually. I don’t drink coffee,” Olivia said quickly.
“Me neither,” Ethan chimed in.
Damian pivoted seamlessly, filling two mugs with steaming hot water and setting out a plate of apple slices and grapes he’d already washed and cut.
Beatty nudged the fruit closer to Olivia. “Here, have some.”
Damian turned to Ethan, “You too, Ethan.”
Beatty nudged the second plate toward him, “Go on, Ethan, try some.”
“Thanks,” Olivia and Ethan said, almost in sync.
Damian guided Beatty to sit beside him, and then, with a little nudge, reminded her, “Didn’t you have something to give Olivia and Ethan?”
Olivia paused mid-bite, glancing at them with curiosity.
Beatty scurried off to her room and returned with two small, colorful envelopes.
She handed one to Olivia. “This is for you.”
