Thinking back on it now, maybe that was the one thing that could really break him.
Ethan Carter’s brow furrowed as he looked at her, concern written all over his face. “When did you go to the hospital a few months ago?”
Olivia Bennett tried to reassure him. “Hey, don’t worry. Remember our first prenatal checkup? You bumped into Carlson Baker in the hallway while I went to the restroom—that’s when it happened. Ring any bells?”
As soon as she said it, Ethan’s memory clicked into place.
Yeah, that was the time she told him, if he ever fell for someone else, he should just tell her outright.
He’d thought it was a bit odd back then. But looking back, it was because she’d caught Mason Bennett cheating that day.
Ethan let out a relieved sigh.
Damian Franklin’s expression had grown serious, too. “I know Mason Bennett. For a guy like him, handing over Carter Enterprises to his daughter would be like giving it all away to an outsider. He’d never allow it. The fact that he’s secretly got a son on the side tells you everything—he’d never let his daughter inherit Carter Enterprises.”
“And Carmen Gates has always doted on her daughter. That alone is enough for them to go to war. But just fighting isn’t enough. If we really want to drive a wedge between them, we’ll have to plan carefully.”
Olivia nodded, her eyes calm and thoughtful, clearly agreeing.
“If there’s anything you need me to do, just say the word,” Ethan said.
Damian smiled a little at him. “Don’t worry, I won’t hold back.”
Olivia’s hands gradually relaxed on her lap.
Damian looked at her with a mix of pride and concern. “Let’s take things one step at a time. Right now, the most important thing is for you to focus on your health and bringing that baby into the world. Take care of yourself, that’s what matters most.”
Olivia stroked her belly, her expression softening. “Okay, I will.”
She had to admit, her emotions had been all over the place these last couple of days.
Beatty, sitting beside her, glanced at her belly, her eyes growing deep and thoughtful. She whispered, “Baby.”
Olivia smiled warmly at her. “Yep, that’s right. There’s a baby in there.”
