Damian Franklin nodded. “Yeah.”
Mason Bennett’s eyes lit up with excitement. He stuck out his hand. “Then I must have seen you in the Wall Street Journal, Mr. Franklin.”
Damian glanced at Mason’s hand for a couple of seconds, his expression unreadable, before finally reaching out for a quick shake. The handshake lasted only a moment before Damian withdrew.
Mason didn’t seem to mind at all. After all, a man who could build the Carter Group into what it was today couldn’t be ordinary. People of status and power were bound to be a little aloof.
Someday, Mason thought, he’d be on their level—maybe even above. And when that day came, he’d make sure to act even more untouchable.
The look in Mason’s eyes turned sharp with ambition for a split second, then he smoothed out his expression and gestured politely. “Mr. Carter, Mr. Carter, Mr. Franklin, please—come inside. The ceremony’s about to start.”
Lance Carter glanced at Olivia Bennett and Ethan Carter, his eyes gentle. “Olivia, why don’t you and Ethan head in first.”
Mason caught the difference in Lance’s tone when he spoke to Olivia. It was nothing like the way he’d spoken to Mason himself—much warmer, almost affectionate. Clearly, Olivia meant a lot to him.
A flash of annoyance crossed Mason’s face. He’d been so busy trying to make an impression on Ethan and Lance that he’d barely even acknowledged Olivia. If he’d upset Ethan or Lance by ignoring her, that wouldn’t be good.
“Olivia, I—” Mason turned toward her, putting on his best friendly smile, but stopped short when he noticed her rounded belly. His eyes widened in disbelief. “Olivia, wait… you’re pregnant?”
Olivia glanced at him, her face calm as ever, giving nothing away.
