Damian Franklin called out to Lily George before turning to Adelina Lane. “Thanks for watching Beatty today, Olivia and I really appreciate it.”
Adelina waved him off with a warm smile. “Oh, don’t mention it! We’re family, aren’t we? I’m not busy anyway, I’d be happy to have Beatty over every day.”
Damian shot her a grateful nod.
Adelina knelt down and held out her hand to Beatty. “Come here, kiddo. Olivia and Damian have some things to take care of, so you get to hang out with me today. Sound good?”
Damian had already prepped Beatty at home, so the little girl just slipped her hand into Adelina’s without a fuss. “Okay.”
Adelina beamed at her, the same gentle look she gave Olivia. “Aren’t you the sweetest?”
Beatty smiled back, then glanced over at Olivia Bennett and Damian. “You two better not be late coming home!”
“We won’t,” Damian and Olivia promised, almost in unison.
With the time just about right, the four adults headed out for the wedding.
Lavinia Bennett’s wedding was being held at a swanky five-star hotel. Valets in crisp red jackets greeted guests at the door, the whole place buzzing with celebration.
Right by the entrance, Mason Bennett stood out in a sharp black suit. Whenever a new guest arrived, he’d greet them with a huge smile; when there was a lull, he’d crane his neck, searching for familiar faces.
The car pulled up, and Ethan Carter hopped out to open the passenger door for Olivia Bennett.
As soon as Olivia set foot on the pavement, Mason hurried over.
“Mr. Carter, you made it!” he gushed, offering Ethan a smile that was a little too eager.
Ethan steadied Olivia, barely flicking his gaze at Mason. He didn’t answer.
