Nannie Bruce's eyes sparkled with mischief. “Well, don’t get too clingy, alright?”
Olivia Bennett couldn’t help but laugh.
They chatted for a while longer until Nannie Bruce rummaged through her coat pocket and pulled out a tiny box.
“What’s that?” Olivia asked.
Nannie Bruce popped it open, revealing a pair of delicate gold bangles. “A little something for my goddaughter, first time meeting her and all.”
She set the box down next to Carey. “See? They look like they were made for her.”
Olivia glanced at the bangles and didn’t bother with false modesty, a playful smile tugging at her lips. “Carey’s going to love them. She’ll thank her godmom, I’m sure.”
Nannie Bruce grinned back.
She checked her watch. “Just wanted to see you with my own eyes. Now that I know you’re alright, I won’t stay and bother you. You rest up. I booked a room at the hotel next to the hospital, need to catch a few hours of sleep before my train.”
Olivia nodded. “Travel safe, okay? Text me when you get there.”
“Will do.”
Nannie Bruce gave Carey one last fond look, waved goodbye, and headed out.
Ethan Carter was waiting on a bench in the hallway. Nannie Bruce waved at him before hustling off.
Ethan came back into the hospital room.
Olivia closed the jewelry box and handed it to him. “Nannie brought these gold bangles for Carey. She’s too little to wear them now, so you better keep them safe.”
“Got it,” Ethan said, tucking the box away before sitting down next to her.
Olivia glanced at him. “Where’s Mom?”
“She went home. Said she’ll come back in the morning.”
“That’s good,” Olivia replied. “She’s really been running herself ragged these last couple of days.”
Ethan leaned in and kissed her forehead gently. “You’re the one who’s really been through it.”
She smiled up at him, eyes full of warmth. “It’s a different kind of hard. But you’ve done your fair share, too.”
