From a Wrong Turn to Mr. Right novel Chapter 346

Ethan Carter decided to tease her a little. “I’m gonna go change into something more comfortable,” he announced.

Olivia Bennett didn’t even look up from her book. “Go ahead.”

A few minutes later, Ethan reappeared in sweatpants and a faded Ohio State T-shirt.

He sat down on the edge of the bed and scooped up their daughter. “Sweetheart, Daddy wants a hug.”

Carey landed in his arms, blinked at him for two seconds, and then, out of the blue, let out a wail.

It was dramatic—lots of noise, barely any tears.

Classic: all bark, no bite.

Ethan froze for a split second, then fell right into dad mode, rocking her gently and murmuring, “Hey, hey, it’s okay, don’t cry, Daddy’s got you… shhh…”

He swayed her in his arms, softly humming the tune to “Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star.” Carey seemed to buy it; her howls faded to sniffles.

Ethan let out a sigh of relief, looking down at her with an exasperated smile. “You’re doing this on purpose, aren’t you?”

Olivia smirked. “Maybe you just startled her.”

Ethan feigned offense, his eyes warm. “Am I really that scary?”

Olivia’s eyes crinkled as she grinned at Carey. “Ask her yourself.”

So Ethan, playing along, peered at his daughter. “Did I scare you, huh? I’ve held you every day this week. Didn’t make any impression?”

Carey didn’t respond, just started waving her little hands in the air like she was conducting an orchestra.

Olivia burst out laughing.

Ethan couldn’t help but join in. He bent down and gently placed Carey back in her little bassinet. “Okay, no more hugs for you.”

Carey turned her head, big round eyes locking on Olivia. She started waving one chubby arm, making little “ah ah” sounds like she was trying to tell them something important.

Olivia leaned in close. “What’s that, baby? Got something to say?”

Carey just kept babbling.
