“I get it now—I really screwed up before. I was reckless and stupid, and I admit it. I swear on my life, you’ll never see me again. Mr. Carter, I know I failed at everything, so can you just forget about all this and let it go?”
Abbott Green and Addie David both looked pleadingly at Ethan Carter.
Abbott chimed in, “I’ll keep a close eye on her. Promise.”
Ethan Carter just looked at them. He didn’t say a word.
Then he turned and walked away.
His security guys followed right behind, and just like that, the suffocating tension in the room vanished. Abbott took two big steps back, grabbed onto the back of a chair, and let out a heavy, shaky breath.
Addie glanced at him, worry all over her face. “Does that mean he agreed?”
Abbott shrugged. “He didn’t argue, so I guess that’s as good as a yes.” He shot a look at Catherine Blair, who was sitting there, tears streaming down her face, looking completely lost.
He scowled, clearly annoyed, and glared at Addie. “You’d better keep a close watch on Catherine from now on. I’ve had enough of cleaning up her messes. She’s been nothing but trouble lately.”
His chest heaved as he tried to calm himself.
Addie said quietly, “But…it was all Shirley Carter’s idea. What if she tries to drag us into more crazy schemes?”
Abbott stopped, thinking it over. “I doubt she’ll try anything soon. Ethan Carter showing up like that—he’s pissed. I don’t think he’s just going to let it slide, and Shirley will probably be lying low for a while.”
Addie nodded. “Makes sense.”
Abbott looked at Catherine again, and the sight of her only made him angrier. He rolled his eyes, muttered something under his breath, and stormed out, leaving just Catherine and Addie in the private dining room.
Catherine was still sobbing, and Addie’s heart softened a little. She grabbed a napkin and handed it to her. “Come on, let it go. Dad’s right—Shirley Carter won’t be messing with us for a while. And you need to forget about Ethan Carter. Seriously.”
Catherine looked at her with red, swollen eyes, but didn’t say anything. Tears just kept falling.
