From a Wrong Turn to Mr. Right novel Chapter 69

“I’m watching you, you know.”

Ethan Carter looked a little awkward, shifting his weight from one foot to the other. “What’s there to watch?”

Olivia Bennett blinked at him with a grin. “Are you mad at me or something?”

Ethan let out a quiet sigh. “…No.”

“Are you sure?” Olivia tried to imitate his earlier frown, scrunching up her face. “Is this what you call ‘not mad’?”

She nailed his expression, but her bright eyes and playful smirk made the whole thing more goofy than angry.

A reluctant smile tugged at Ethan’s lips. There was a hint of amusement in his eyes, even if he was trying not to show it. “Okay, I’ll admit, that was pretty close.”

Olivia puffed out her chest proudly. “I watched you for ages just now, you know.”

She sounded ridiculously pleased with herself.

Ethan squeezed her hand a little tighter, his thumb brushing over her knuckles. He didn’t argue. Instead, he said quietly, “Yeah, I was mad. But honestly? I was mostly just freaked out.”

He didn’t say it, but he was thinking about how close things had gotten—a girl had barreled into them out of nowhere, and for a split second, he’d felt his heart stop. He’d never felt like that before, not even as a kid.

Thank God he’d managed to shield Olivia. He didn’t even want to imagine what could have happened if he hadn’t.

Olivia seemed to get it. She gave a little nod, squeezing his hand back.

But what was done was done, and there was no use dwelling on it.

“I’m fine,” Olivia said with a huff. “Honestly, you should’ve seen those two girls—Aileen and her friend? They looked like they were about to burst into tears after you glared at them.”

Ethan’s lips twitched. “Was I really that scary?”

Olivia cut him off before he could say more. She shook her head. “Not really. They’re just kids, and they got a real fright. Plus, you looked downright terrifying for a second there.”

Ethan just grunted.

Ethan nodded and started forward, but then he stopped abruptly, his gaze locking on something ahead.

Olivia took a step before realizing he wasn’t moving. His hand was still wrapped around hers, so she glanced back, puzzled. “What is it?”

Before Ethan could answer, a deep, steady voice called out.

“Done for the day?”

It wasn’t Ethan’s voice.

Olivia turned and saw a man in his forties, hair perfectly in place, jawline sharp, and eyes with a hint of intensity. He wore a tailored suit that screamed confidence and ease—the kind of guy who looked like he’d just stepped out of a boardroom or walked off the cover of GQ.

Realizing he must know Ethan, Olivia instinctively moved closer to Ethan’s side, letting him take the lead.

Ethan’s face didn’t change. He just gave a short nod. “Yeah, we’re done.”
