From a Wrong Turn to Mr. Right novel Chapter 77

The waiter had just come by and mentioned this dish was super popular lately. “If you like it, we can order another plate later,” Daniel said in a casual tone, not fussing about it.

Lavinia Bennett shot him a look, her lips pursed so tight you could hang a bottle opener from them. “Do you really think I eat that much?” She glared, clearly annoyed.

Order two more? What, did he think she was starving?

Daniel glanced up, his long eyes clouded with confusion. “I just thought you liked it,” he replied, honestly puzzled.

Lavinia’s annoyance melted away. She pushed the plate of grilled salmon back toward him, making her intentions clear. “I want some more, but you have to take out the bones for me.”

Daniel stiffened.

He’d only ever deboned fish for Olivia Bennett before.

His throat tightened, and when he spoke, his voice was a little colder than usual. “There aren’t many bones in this fish.”

“You just don’t want to do it for me,” Lavinia huffed, crossing her arms. She looked ready to pick a fight. “You’re getting more and more impatient with me, Daniel. Maybe you never even liked me at all.”

She’d seen the way Daniel deboned fish for Olivia—so careful, so attentive, never losing patience.

Daniel clenched his jaw. Watching Lavinia throw a fit made him want to get up and leave, but after a couple seconds of silence, he stayed put.

He looked at her, his voice dry but gentle. “I just thought you’d finish faster on your own. I’m slow at this, and if I keep you waiting, you’ll get home late.”

Lavinia’s hazel eyes flashed as she let out a soft, indignant laugh. “How late could it be? We’re adults, you know. Nobody’s going to ground us for coming home late. Besides, we’re almost married—if I went to your place, it wouldn’t be a big deal. You just don’t want to do it for me. But when it was Olivia, you were all about it.”

Daniel’s heart twisted, but his face didn’t change. He let out a cold, confused sound. “Was I?”

Lavinia arched a brow. “Don’t you remember?”

Daniel nodded and went for another piece. “Let me get you one more.”

Lavinia’s smile grew even wider, a hint of smugness behind it.

After swallowing her bite, she watched Daniel carefully debone another piece, and then, thinking for a moment, said, “Daniel, can I tell you something?”

He didn’t even look up. “What is it?”

She hesitated, then said, “I ran into Olivia today.”

Daniel’s hand paused for just a second, but he quickly recovered, acting as if the name meant nothing. His reply was flat: “Oh.”

Lavinia practically glowed with mischief. She curved her lips into a little smile. “She heard we’re getting married, you know. And since she runs that photography studio, I asked her to shoot our wedding photos. She said yes.”
