Chapter 247 It’s All Over
Athena got the answer she needed and left the police station.
A low-key black car was waiting outside. The window was down, showing part of Zaden’s handsome face. When he saw her, he stepped out and walked over.
“Let’s go.”
He reached for her hand and led her to the passenger seat, opening the door for her.
Athena didn’t say anything and just got in.
Zaden also stayed quiet, started the car, and drove off. She stared out the window as the scenery blurred past, her mind heavy with thoughts of her daughter, Lewis, and Nina.
“I’ll hire a good lawyer,” Zaden said, glancing at her. His voice was low and serious. “Lewis almost hurt you last time. My mom bailed him out back then, but no one is helping him this time.”
“Got it,” Athena muttered absentmindedly.
For a while, the car was silent.
Then, she snapped out of her thoughts and looked at him. “You knew all along that the kid with Lewis wasn’t my daughter, didn’t you?”
He met her clear eyes, feeling like he couldn’t hide a thing. She’d already guessed he knew.
“Yeah, I knew. I just worried you wouldn’t believe me if I told you straight up.”
But this time, Athena trusted him completely, not Lewis.
Zaden felt a rush of relief and happiness. It meant more to him that Athena believed him than anything else. She chose him in the end.
“Sorry,” he said simply. He didn’t have much else to say, so he just apologized and admitted his
mistakes.
Athena exhaled slowly. “Forget it. It’s not really your fault. If you’d told me back then, I probably wouldn’t have doubted you, though I still would’ve double-checked the girl’s identity before believing you.”
Hearing she wasn’t blaming him, Zaden finally relaxed.
“I had Tommy send that girl back to her family,” he said.
Athena still felt a little upset thinking about it.
Lewis had claimed he couldn’t find her daughter, and even he had no clue where she was. So how was she supposed to find her?
No wonder Kit hadn’t sent any news.
The last lead had been fake, and then nothing.
She was tired of hoping and being disappointed.
The rest of the drive was silent. After a while, the car stopped. Zaden said, “We’re here.”
Athena looked out and realized they were at Kate’s house.
She frowned in confusion. “Why’d you bring me here?”
“I’m worried about you being alone. I figured you needed a quiet place to settle down, so I thought it’d be better to drop you here. Somebody can keep an eye on you.”
Zaden had wanted to stay with Athena, but he worried his presence might make things harder.
She hadn’t expected him to care like that.
She wasn’t fragile—just a little lost.
“Thanks for looking out for me,” Athena said as she stepped out of the car. She turned to him. “I’m going in. See you.”
She rang the doorbell at Kate’s house, and soon Kate’s voice called from inside.
When Kate opened the door, she looked surprised. “What brings you here, Athena?”
