From Betrayal to Brilliance Her Rise to a New Life novel Chapter 249

Chapter 249 A Woman I Can’t Get Over?

Teri smiled sweetly at Zaden. “Dad, Athena let us in.”

Zaden stepped inside, carrying a bottle of wine. He looked at Athena, concern in his voice. “How are you feeling?”

“I’m fine,” Athena replied simply.

Kate spotted him and said with a smile, “You didn’t need to bring anything! Just come on in. I haven’t seen you and Teri in forever-I’ve actually been thinking about you two lately.”

Zaden smiled politely. “We figured you might be missing us, so we decided to stop by.”

He was essentially covering up for Harriet’s lie.

Harriet was quite pleased with Zaden’s quick thinking. This was exactly why she’d chosen him for Athena.

Kate left Athena and Zaden in the living room to watch TV while she dragged Harriet into the kitchen to help. She wouldn’t let Athena do anything, insisting that as a guest, she shouldn’t lift a finger.

She even called Teri in to help prep the veggies.

Athena understood that Kate wanted her to have some private time with Zaden, but she couldn’t say anything against it. All she could do was awkwardly sit in the living room with Zaden.

The TV was playing a movie, but Athena’s mind was elsewhere.

Zaden sat not far from her.

After a bit, she turned to him. “Zaden … I’m planning to start working at the hospital in a couple of days.

After all, Zaden was a major stakeholder in the hospital, and technically, he was her boss. He had even helped her out during that incident at the last interview, so she felt it was only right to inform him.

Zaden nodded. “Understood. If you run into any problems, just let me know.”

Then the silence came back.

Athena had no clue what to say next.

Their relationship was incredibly awkward; even though they were legally the closest of kin, there were so many unspoken issues between them.

Athena actually wanted to ask Zaden what their future held.

If what Lewis said was true, and his ex was really back in the picture, she’d just back off and stay out of it. She’d pretend none of this had ever happened.

She’d lock the whole thing away and try to move on.

“Uh… “Athena started to say something, but before she could, Kate and Harriet walked out carrying the dishes. “Dinner’s ready! Come on, let’s eat.”

Athena bit back what she was about to say and stood up. “Alright, coming.”

Zaden looked deeply at Athena.

He’d caught that she’d wanted to say something before, but she’d been cut off.

Once everyone sat down, the mood was light and friendly.

Then, out of nowhere, Kate gave Zaden a sharp look and asked, “Zaden, Athena told me there’s some woman you still can’t get over?”

Athena froze.

Her eyes widened-she nearly choked on her food.

Wasn’t that a bit too direct?

While she had mentioned it before, she hadn’t intended for Kate to confront him like that. She couldn’t believe Kate had asked so boldly.

She wanted to disappear under the table.

Forcing a stiff laugh, she said, “No, no, I just heard about it, that’s all. I thought if that’s really the case, maybe we should just go ahead and take care of the marriage paperwork so it doesn’t mess up your life or anything.”

Now that the topic was on the table, she might as well lay it all out.

After all, she had planned to discuss this with Zaden anyway.
