Caroline came back faster than Reese expected. Her heart dropped. Was Caroline really going to save them?

She quickly covered her mouth, afraid Caroline might have heard all the terrible things they’d said about her and changed her mind.

As Caroline walked closer, Reese noticed the bag in her hand.

Her heart leapt with hope–maybe it was food. But the bag was too small. It didn’t look like it could hold anything warm.

Still, she couldn’t stop staring at Caroline’s mink coat. She wanted that coat so badly.

She opened the bag with excitement, but her smile froze. Her face got pale.

There was a big hatchet, some bandages, and some medicine inside.

“Caroline, what’s that supposed to mean?” Reese demanded.

Caroline looked at her calmly. In her mind, she saw the image from her past life—how Jonathan had tricked her, how they cut her open, drained her of blood, and those people ate her flesh. Reese sat nearby, quietly unwrapping a piece of candy from her storage space and popping it into her mouth.

“Reese,” Caroline said coldly, “you know how powerful his family is. You’re still sticking with Jonathan because you thought sharing hardship with him would win you a place as his wife. After this, you can climb the social ladder. Now that chance is here.”

“Jonathan’s hands and feet are frozen, right? That’s severe frostbite. If you don’t cut them off, the infection could spread. He could lose an entire arm or a whole leg. Then the Lowlands‘ favorite grandson will be ruined.”

She shoved the bag toward Reese. “These are the tools. You can save him by cutting off his hands and feet. The choice is yours.”

Reese was stunned by her words.

She remembered the night before the government’s rescue came in her last life. Someone had knocked her and Jonathan out cold.

She’d always suspected Caroline, but she had no proof.

Reese had known Caroline for years and never taken her seriously. She thought Caroline might be cruel for a moment, but deep down she was still that useless orphan.

Now Reese realized she had been wrong.

Completely wrong.

“Caroline, are you insane? You’re trying to kill Jonathan! Do you even know his family? They might not be here now, but when the rescue team comes and I contact them, they’ll know everything you did! His grandmother will make sure you pay for it!”

Caroline almost laughed.

She stepped forward, and Reese stumbled back.

With a mocking smile, Caroline said, “Everyone knows you two are together. If he dies, who do you think his grandmother will blame? You? Or me? You can threaten me all you want, but you’d better focus on saving him instead. I already showed you the only way–whether you do it or not, that’s up to you.”

She shut the stairwell door and walked away.

Reese yelled at the door for ten minutes. No one answered. Finally, she went downstairs, filled with complicated thoughts.

She and Jonathan were staying on the 45th floor now. John had moved into the apartment next door.

That morning, John’s knocking woke Reese up.

When she opened her eyes, she realized the room temperature had dropped to -4°F.

She jumped out of bed and threw on every piece of warm clothing she could find,

Reese was freezing but at least still conscious. Jonathan, however, had passed out cold. John slapped him hard across the face, and only then did Jonathan wake up. His hands and feet had turned dark purple–completely numb.

“This is all your fault!” Jonathan shouted hoarsely. “You stole all the blankets! You wanted me dead, you witch!”

“When Jonathan saw the state of his hands and feet, he tried to move them several times but couldn’t.

Frustration rose in his chest, and soon he started yelling at Reese.”
