Reese’s voice trembled as Caroline’s words flashed through her mind.

It was her idea for them to come to this apartment to test Tyler. Patricia knew about this too.

At that time, all she could think about was how easy Jonathan was to control. His family’s fortune couldn’t fall into anyone else’s hands. She never imagined they’d end up trapped here, facing acid rain and everything that came after.

She knew exactly what Patricia was capable of.

Reese looked down at the hatchet and bandages in her hands. She had second thoughts about

this.

“What’s that?” John asked, eyeing the items curiously.

Reese explained Caroline’s suggestion. John fell silent for a moment, then he grabbed the hatchet and walked into the room.

“John, what are you doing?” she called out nervously.

He gave a cold snort. “You said he can’t die, right? Then cutting off his limbs shouldn’t hurt. His arm’s already turning black–if we don’t do something, it’ll rot off. We’re helping him.”

Reese knew he was right. Gritting her teeth, she stomped her feet and hurriedly went to the next door.

She tried to convince herself that if Patricia ever questioned it later, she could say she had nothing to do with it.

Soon, Jonathan’s screams filled the air, echoing again and again through the hallway.

Two hours later, John stepped out, his hands and blade stained with blood. “It’s done. I bandaged him up. With those antibiotics, he’ll live–but his hand and foot are gone. He’s crippled for life.”

Reese froze, unsure how to feel.

When she noticed John was staring at her, she quickly lowered her head and said softly, “John, thank you. But you have to promise me–you’ll tell them we did this to save Jonathan, not hurt. him. When his family comes looking, you’ll testify for us, right?”

“Of course,” John said with a grin. “In this godforsaken weather, surviving is all that matters. Without us, that pretty boy would have died.”

Reese nodded quickly. She’d already made up her mind. From now on, she’d make Jonathan believe she’d saved him—make him grateful, loyal, and easy to control.

After all, Jonathan was never that smart to begin with.

John leaned closer with a grin. “Sure. But tell me, sweetheart, what can a delicate girl like you rely on in a world like this? Stick with me, and I’ll protect you.”

He suddenly moved closer toward her.

Reese lowered her head again, pretending to be bashful. She nodded slightly.

When John saw her acting like that, a spark lit inside him. He couldn’t hold back anymore; he pulled her straight into his arms.

But what neither of them knew was that Caroline had followed them downstairs not long after Reese left.

She heard their whole plan–the screams, the moans, even John dragging Reese into the bedroom.

Then she quietly pushed open Jonathan’s door.

The fire was burning, but the room was still cold.

Jonathan lay on the bed like a lifeless lump of meat, his right hand and foot gone, wrapped in a rough bandage that was already soaked through with blood.

All around the bed, blood had splattered across the floor and walls. The sight was gruesome and hard to look at.

Caroline noticed the antibiotics still lying on the table–John had forgotten to give them. She smiled faintly, pulled out a bottle of water from her storage space, slipped the pills into Jonathan’s mouth, and helped him swallow them down.

“You better not die from infection this early,” Caroline said, giving Jonathan’s pale, unconscious face a few pats. “Otherwise, the fun ends here.”
