In seconds, Caroline’s group was pushed onto a moral high ground, burned under a storm of judgment.

People shouted that if they didn’t help, they were heartless–trash who didn’t deserve to live.

Some even threatened them, saying that when the government finally came, they’d report Caroline and the others for being cold–blooded devils.

That made Caroline laugh.

If, in this frozen apocalypse, being cold–headed and refusing to play saint made someone a devil, then every devil out there should’ve died a hundred times already.

“Survival of the fittest,” Caroline called out coolly through the door.

Her words made the crowd explode with anger. People started cursing–loud, ugly words thrown mostly at her.

The insults got so bad they even dragged her parents into it. That was the last straw.

Fury burned through her as she grabbed her blade and stormed out.

The shouting stopped the second she appeared.

Caroline scanned the group and noticed two tall men she didn’t recognize.

She didn’t know that they were friends of Erica and Charlie–people from the next building who had crossed the snow last night to discuss heading to a nearby shelter together.

They had no idea what Caroline and her group were capable of, which was why they were bold enough to shout at her.

And judging from the voice that had insulted her parents, it was one of those two.

Erica bit her lip and looked at Caroline with pleading eyes. “Caroline, please help us–ah!”

Just then, a mutated rat lunged from the shadows.

People screamed and scattered. The two tall men shoved women in front of them to block the rat as they stumbled backward.

One of the men bolted for the doorway. Caroline rushed forward, grabbed him, and slammed him against the wall.

Her arm locked tight around his neck as a cold smile curved her lips. “You were the one who called me names, weren’t you?”

The man panicked, thrashing wildly, trying to grab at Caroline behind him.

But Caroline moved too fast, too precisely–she didn’t give him a chance to fight back. She kicked the back of his knee, hard. His leg buckled, and he dropped to the floor with his face pressed against the ground.

At that very moment, the mutated rat lunged and sank its teeth straight into his face.

“Ahhh!” The man screamed, jerking and twisting in terror. But Caroline didn’t let wrapped an arm tighter around his neck, holding him in place as he struggled.

“You insult me,” she said coldly, “you pay for it.”

Her eyes then shifted toward the other man who’d cursed her.

He froze briefly, then turned to run.

Caroline released one hand, pulled the Tivara knife from her belt, and hurled it.

The man screamed and dropped to the ground. The knife was buried deep in the back of his skull.

In front of him, the man Caroline had been holding onto was already dead–torn apart by the

mutant rats.

One of the creatures turned toward Caroline, ready to attack, but she kicked it hard, sending it flying across the floor.

Everyone stood frozen, horrified. Caroline walked toward the man she had just killed. She pulled her knife free and looked around at the others with a calm, chilling smile. “So,” she asked softly, “what do you think is scarier–the mutant rats or me?”

The crowd broke apart in panic, terrified.

A cold chill ran down everyone’s spine.

Without a trace of hesitation, Caroline dragged the two troublemakers‘ bodies to the edge of the building and tossed them over.
