Caroline suddenly remembered the security door installed at the stairway on the 48th floor.
No wonder they’d put one there–there must’ve been so much stuff piled in the hallway that they needed to block it off.
She let out a cold laugh. Those two from the 48th, Erica and her husband, were something else.
Caroline also collected supplies in bulk. She’d even emptied an entire floor across the street.
But as the saying goes, save some for the others. Clearing out everything right under your neighbors‘ noses was asking for trouble.
On her way down, she’d noticed that aside from the 48th, there were still people alive in the building–like that wife–beater and his poor wife, and Bethany’s daughter–in–law.
Each door had clear signs of people living inside–makeshift barriers, nailed boards, or stacked furniture.
Some even peeked out nervously when Caroline’s group passed.
What she didn’t expect was that Erica’s new door would spark outrage across the building.
Apparently, a few people had already discovered that their firewood was gone.
They’d assumed it was the gang from the 66th floor.
The group was feared by everyone because of how fierce they were and because they had that huge black mutant dog.
No one dared to fight back. Even if all the survivors banded together, they wouldn’t stand a chance against that beast.
But today, when the 66th–floor crew came downstairs to gather wood and left empty–handed -talking about that new metal door on the 48th–people started putting two and two together.
At the same time, people also noticed the new metal gate that suddenly appeared at the stairwell on Erica’s floor.
“Who the hell took all the furniture and firewood? You want the rest of us to die out here? Damn it, Erica! I actually thought you were a decent person!”

One by one, other residents who’d been quietly watching from behind their doors stepped out
too.
In just a few minutes, nearly everyone still alive in the building–except Erica’s family–had come out into the stairwell.
They cursed, yelled, and began gathering together, anger building like a storm.
Soon, the crowd had formed into a mob, all united by the same fury.
Caroline’s
group
didn’t interfere. They had no interest in joining the chaos.
To them, it wasn’t time to start raiding other survivors‘ homes.
Instead, they decided to check out Building B.
That side had been mostly offices, not apartments, which meant more desks, chairs, and furniture to burn.
A trip there would probably yield more than picking fights with desperate neighbors.
Truth be told, they’d planned to explore Building B eventually. Erica’s greed just made them
move sooner.
Erica had always been good at dealing with people.
Before the apocalypse, she was the kind of woman everyone liked. Her boss appreciated her, and the neighbors spoke well of her.
Every year she was named a model employee.
At home, she had a husband who adored her–completely devoted, always taking her side, never once arguing back.
Life was perfect.
She owed it all to her charm, her quick tongue, and her sharp mind.
After the apocalypse began, those same traits helped her again. With her smooth words and friendly smile, she quickly won the trust of the people in her building–the ones who had always liked her anyway.
They even voted her as their building captain.
