Charlie’s eyes darted for a moment, then he smiled. Heylook who it is. Wayne, don’t get worked up. What are you saying? We’ve always been neighbors and friends. We wouldn’t do something like that. That was the 66th floor’s nasty business.

Charlie and Erica had rehearsed that line.

They agreed to pin this on the 66th floor. Their stash wasn’t just firewood. They had a lot more. If the upstairs folks found out, Charlie and Erica might not get away with it.

Nonsense! The 66th went down looking for wood and found nothing!Wayne swore loudly and ignored Charlie. He kicked the door again and again.

He hadn’t eaten much over the last few days and had little strength. The door didn’t break. He just wore himself out.

The others at the door kept cursing too. One of them was a young man, all skin and bone and short. His eyes were red. He stared at the big door and shivered, maybe from anger, maybe from cold. You took our firewood, the stuff that kept us alive. Open up now, or we’ll break in!

Charlie saw things were slipping. He knew they couldn’t back down now. He laughed and called to them through the door, Break in then. You might as well get in before you starve.”

After that, he didn’t bother with them. He went back inside.

Charlie was proud of the plan he and his wife had cooked up and sealing the stairwell like the 66th floor did.

Now two heavy iron gates barred the stairwell. Those pale, thin people could shout all they wanted. They couldn’t force the door open.

Erica stayed inside and only relaxed when Charlie came back. She patted her chest and asked, Are you okay?

Charlie stroked Erica’s face and laughed. I’m fine. Let them fuss. What do they think they could do to us?

Erica laughed and rested her head on his shoulder. You’re amazing, honey.

Outside, the crowd fussed for a while, then realized it was useless. They spat a few times at the door in anger.

If you have what it takes, don’t come out. When you do, I’ll finish you!Wayne kicked the door

one last time, then turned and left.

He didn’t notice the pair of eyes watching him from nearby.

It was Bethany’s daughterinlaw, staring at him with hate.

On the other side, Caroline and the others planned to reach Building B using the corridor that links Buildings A and B.

But to their surprise, the corridor had been destroyed.

The walkway sat at the 40th level. It was half out in the open, with a modest roof over it— vented on both sides, not fully sealed.

After long bouts of acid rain and the recent deep freeze, the middle section had collapsed.

The gap was a little over ten feet.

They stood on Building A’s side and stared. For a moment, no one spoke.

Now it made sense why nobody from Building A had been going over to Building B.

I can make it,Tyler said after a beat.

Caroline looked at him. She wasn’t surprised.

I’ve got a rope.”

Caroline pulled a hemp rope from her backpack. It was about two fingers thick, roughly an inch.

She had guessed the walkway might give out. She’d seen too many buildings ruined by acid rain in the last world.

Caroline never expected she’d actually need it.

Tyler took the rope and stepped back.

Caroline began to ask what he planned, but then he ran. He sprinted maybe 30 feet, then leaped like a sleek leopard, landing cleanly on the other side.

No stumble. No hesitation.
