Caroline and Raven stood silently, staring toward the spot where he vanished, and waited patiently.
One minute passed. Then another.
In the stillness, Caroline thought she heard something below.
A soft, almost weightless landing sound.
Then came a faint meow.
She froze. A cat?
Raven’s back arched instantly. His blue eyes locked on the stairs, ready to attack.
Moments later, a black cat emerged from the shadows below. It crept up the stairs slowly, its movements silent and careful.
Then, a shadow shot up from under the stairs.
Caroline jumped in shock. She realized that shadow was Jet.
She had never seen him fly so fast!
The bird darted in circles above her head, clearly terrified. He opened his beak again and again but made no sound, still obeying her rule–no talking outside.
“You’re allowed to report,” Caroline said quickly, her eyes never leaving the cat.
The black cat tilted its head slightly, looking at them with a curious expression. It didn’t move closer, staying where it was. One paw lifted into the air, like it was testing something.
At first glance, it looked harmless–like a regular house cat basking in the sun, the kind that might roll over and show its belly any second.
Except… for its size,
This cat was huge. It was about the size of a leopard, more than three feet long. Its tail curled slightly upward, and its paws were as big as a man’s hand. Caroline could only imagine the claws hidden inside those soft pads–long, sharp, and deadly.

Big cats had always been kings of the wild–tigers ruling the forest, lions ruling the plains.
Even leopards, cheetahs, and snow leopards were fierce predators.
Someone once said that the only reason house cats seem gentle and cute is because they’re small. If they were any bigger, humans would never dare keep them.
Now, looking at the creature in front of her, Caroline felt a chill crawl up her spine. There was nothing “cute” about this thing.
But the truly terrifying part was still coming.
After getting Caroline’s permission to speak, Jet blurted out in a trembling voice, “Cats! So many cats! A lot of them!”
His voice shook, filled with panic.
Then he flew straight onto Raven’s back and hid there, trembling.
Raven suddenly lunged forward, standing in front of Caroline, shielding her completely.
That was when she heard it too.
From below came the faint sound of many paws–light and quick, almost silent.
But together, they made a strange rhythm: pat, pat, pat.
Then she saw them. Behind the black cat, countless glowing green eyes appeared in the darkness.
Meow, meow meow.
The chorus of calls echoed through the stairwell, blending into a cold, cerie symphony that made Caroline’s whole body tense.
She took a quick glance–at least 20 of them.
All enormous, mutated cats.
Her mind started racing, searching desperately for a way out.
In her
past life, after the insect disaster, many mutated creatures had appeared.
Caroline had faced deadly situations before, but she’d never been alone. She always had a team
back then.
