Chapter 125 There’s Something Down There

Raven, left!

Caroline pulled the rope on Raven’s left side.

Right!

She tugged the other way.

After a few tries, they finally got the rhythm. Their teamwork grew smoother.

Soon, they reached their destination, which was located barely half a mile away.

Caroline jumped off the sidecar and unhooked the ropes from Raven.

She scanned the area carefully. In front of her stood a small building, about eight or nine stories tall.

The problem was, most of it was buried under snow.

The warehouse she needed to reach was at the bottom.

After circling around the building, Caroline finally spotted a window she could enter through.

She kicked the glass with her boot and climbed inside.

What she didn’t expect was that the buildingnearly swallowed by snowstill had residents.

And not just one.

Once she landed inside, Caroline turned on her headlamp.

The beam revealed rows of machines.

It was a factory or, more accurately, a canned food production line.

But the place had long been abandoned. Power was out, and everything had rotted. The stench of spoiled food filled the air.

She took a few cautious steps forward until her foot hit something.

Clang! Clang! Clang!

Metal rolled across the floor. Caroline quickly jumped back, heart pounding in alert.

Raven also backed up, baring his teeth toward the darkness ahead.

Nothing moved. Then Caroline saw ita can had rolled to a stop.

She bent down and picked it up. It was a perfectly sealed sardine can.

Caroline swung her light around and froze. The floor was covered with sardine cans- hundreds of themstill unopened, scattered everywhere.

And there was more. She spotted at least five different kinds of canned fish stacked in piles ahead.

Caroline grinned. She began collecting as she walked.

But when she reached the staircase, she stopped cold.

Raven seemed uneasy.

His

eyes were fixed on the darkness below, fur standing on end. Something was down there.

Caroline switched off her headlamp. The room fell into shadow. She observed the staircase carefully, but she found nothing.

She listened carefullyno sound.

Still, she trusted Raven’s senses more than her own.

She was certain there was something down there.

Something wasn’t right about this building.

After the acid rain finally stopped, the government had sent rescue teams oncebut only once. Even so, many people had still come around, searching for supplies.

Canned food was easy to store, and these were all meatsomething people loved. Yet strangely, there were no signs that anyone had opened or even touched them.

Caroline walked through the entire floor. The food on the conveyor belts had simply decayed with timeno claw marks, no bite marks, no sign of theft.

The few cans on the floor were scattered, but most were neatly lined up on the shelves, almost

untouched.

The entire floor was strangely neattoo neat for a place that had survived the apocalypse. Aside from a few dents and scratches, it looked almost untouched.

Caroline didn’t believe it. There was no way this whole building had been left alone or that no one had ever entered this floor.
