Ignoring the restless demand from that shameless storage pendant, Caroline pulled out a needle and pricked Raven’s paw. A drop of his blood fell into the pendant.

Raven tilted his head, watching in confusion.

But when his blood sank in completely, his pupils tightened sharply.

Caroline knew at once. He was now linked to the storage space.

To test it, she took a can of food from her storage space and showed him how to store it. She demonstrated several times, speaking slowly and clearly.

Raven stared, his big head tilted like he didn’t quite get it.

After several tries, he finally reached out his paw and touched the can. It vanished!

Just to be sure, Caroline gave him a few more things to test.

Each time, Raven succeeded.

Good job, Raven,Caroline said, patting his head. The supplies from the lower floors are all yours to collect now.

Raven frowned deeply, the whites of his eyes showing as he looked at Caroline with a face full of unwillingness.

Caroline sighed. She knew it was a lot to ask from him. For a dog that had only just evolved, this mission was heavy. But she didn’t have another choice.

When you see a door, try to open it. You can do it.”

Raven had already learned how to open doors at home. Regular ones were

easy

for him.

As for the coldstorage doors. Well, it was worth a try.

If it’s too dangerous or you can’t do it, that’s okay. Just come back quickly.

She leaned close to his ear and repeated the words several times until she was sure he understood.

Then, she let him go.

Raven shrank his body, the storage pendant hanging from his neck. The dog then crawled into the hole.

Caroline stayed behind, holding Jet in her arms. Both of them waited at the same spot.

Jet kept glancing upward, nervous and alert.

Caroline knew the mutant cats were still nearby. They hadn’t attacked because they were scaredbut they hadn’t left either. They were watching, waiting.

She waited too. Two long hours passed.

There was no sound from below. No movement. It was as if Raven had vanished.

Caroline worried about Raven during those two long hours, but she kept telling herself he’d be fine. He was smart, quick, and stronger than any normal dog. Now that he could grow or shrink at will, what could possibly hurt him?

By around four in the morning, the sky outside began to lighten. The morning star shimmered faintly through the frostcovered window. Just then, Caroline heard a sound from below.

Her heart jumped. She rushed to the hole and leaned over to look.

A black claw scraped its way out of the hole.

Surprisingly, that claw doesn’t belong to Raven.

The instant that claw appeared, the mutant cats behind her went wild. They were growling, their eyes glowing green, their tails puffed up like bristles.

It was clear nowthose mutant cats and the darkclawed creature below were sworn enemies.

But if that wasn’t Raven, where was he?

Caroline pulled out her Tivara knife from her storage space and fixed her eyes on the hole.

Earlier, she had dimmed her headlamp to a soft yellow, afraid of provoking the mutant cats

behind her.

But now, facing whatever was hiding inside, she pressed the button on her lamp. The light shifted from yellow to pale white.

In that instant, she finally saw it. A claw at the edge of the hole, its base smeared with dark red

blood.
