All the fear and grief she’d been holding in these past few days–especially the pain of her disfigured face–exploded all at once.
Kay struck the woman who kept cursing her parents, hitting her again and again.
Then she drove the knife into Erica’s body several times until she couldn’t move her arm
anymore.
When it was finally over, Kay stood there, gasping for air. Erica was lying motionless on the floor.
Kay reached out a trembling hand and held it near Erica’s nose. No breath. Only then did she let out a shaky sigh of relief.
She stared at the body in disbelief, then at her hands covered in blood. She couldn’t believe she had actually killed someone.
Just a few months ago, she had been an ordinary yoga instructor.
She spent her mornings teaching breathing exercises, helping people stay calm and balanced.
Now, she had turned into someone else entirely.
With shaking fingers, she wiped her knife clean and slid it back into her pack. Grabbing her golf club, Kay walked upstairs.
Her fists clenched tight. In her mind, she kept encouraging herself to stay strong. That she can’t slow Caroline and Tyler down anymore.
She walked for five or six minutes before disappearing into the hallway above.
Then, Erica, who was supposed to be dead, twitched. Slowly, she opened her eyes.
Grimacing, she pressed a hand against her side and forced herself to stand. Her face twisted with hatred as she glared in the direction Kay had gone. Her eyes filled with pure hatred.
She had come prepared. Before climbing up here, she knew she might get beaten—or worse, that Caroline might kill her outright.
So she’d padded her chest and stomach with layers of cloth, leaving only her side unprotected.
It slipped down when she rushed from running downstairs.

Kay’s knife had only nicked that small spot on her waist. The rest of her body was fine.

Kay, panicking and untrained, had stabbed wildly. She never noticed that most of the blows hadn’t gone deep at all.
With all the layers Erica wore, she couldn’t tell the difference between hitting flesh and stabbing through fabric.
When she saw blood on her knife, she assumed she’d struck a fatal blow.
Erica had held her breath, gone limp, and fooled her completely.
“Damn you, Kay! Fuck you, Caroline! Screw all of you on the 66th floor! Just wait! I’ll make you pay! I’ll get my revenge!”
Erica clutched her wounded side and stumbled downstairs.
She didn’t expect it. When she got home, tears were in her eyes, and she was hoping her husband would comfort her.
Erica found he had already frozen to death in that short time she was away.
Charlie’s eyes were wide and his mouth open, like he had been looking for Erica right until the end, calling her name.
But Erica was not beside him.
There was a look in his face, a mix of unwillingness to die and something like longing.
“Charlie! Charlie, my love!”
Erica sank to her knees and held his head.
She tucked his head into her arms, trying to give him one last bit of warmth.
For a moment she felt, foolishly, that if she could just warm him up, he might come back.
But it was impossible.
Erica cried until her voice was raw. The pain in her side throbbed so badly she could barely move. When she finally got up, she treated the wound as best she could.
She was weak from blood loss and cold.
There was nothing left in the house to burn for heat–no wood, no fuel.
