From the marks inside the room–dragged lines across the floor and the window ledge–she couldn’t help but suspect it. Her parents were dead. Someone had thrown their bodies out the window.
Now, hearing Erica cursing at her parents, she finally snapped.
When Caroline was about to chase Erica, Kay stopped her. There was a firm look in Kay’s eyes.
“I’ll do it.”
Caroline nodded.
Kay had always been the one protected, always standing behind others. Maybe it was time for her to take a step forward.
Erica panicked and ran down the stairs. Kay went after her.
Caroline went inside her apartment.
At that moment, Erica regretted everything.
Before the world fell apart, she’d had a happy marriage. She and Charlie had supported each other after the apocalypse began. Life had become hard, but they still had hope.
They were smart too. The couple sealed their floor early and stored plenty of food and fuel.
With all the supplies they’d gathered, they thought they could make it through the winter just fine.
But no one expected what happened next.
That day, a group of survivors joined forces and smashed open their reinforced door. They stormed in like a mob, taking everything they wanted.
Leading them was a young man named Zach Thornton.
He’d always been a quiet, polite boy before–thin, gentle, even calling her Ms. Erica.
Zach now looked at her as if she were his enemy.
He even went as far as to hurt her husband.

“You wicked witch! The two of you deserve to die!” Zach shouted, throwing Charlie to the floor. He and the others ignored Erica’s pleas and carried off every stick of firewood and every piece of furniture. They left nothing behind.
That night, the last bit of wood they had burned out.
And that was when she realized Charlie had a high fever.
Using their last bit of gas, she boiled a pot of hot water for him. She took care of him all night, giving him fever medicine.
Charlie’s fever never went down.
He kept shivering, whispering through cracked lips, “I’m freezing! It’s so cold!”
Erica was terrified and burned with hatred.
She had begged Zach for help, begged everyone on the upper floors.
But no one cared. Someone even spat at her and kicked her out.
With nowhere else to turn, she finally risked everything and came to the 66th floor.
She knew they had firewood, food, and medicine.
Erica thought, if they can save Charlie, she’ll do anything.
Be their servant, their slave–whatever it took.
But the moment the door opened and she saw their cold, blank faces, she knew. They weren’t going to help her.
She kept begging and crying until her throat burned, but they just shut the door. That’s when something inside her snapped. The humiliation, the helplessness–it all exploded.
She screamed, cursed them, and called them all monsters.
Erica was jealous of them.
Why could they still live so well when everyone else was dying?
More than once, she had smelled meat drifting down from upstairs.
Even standing at the stairwell, she could feel warmth seeping through the walls.

They had heat. They had power. Light glowed from their windows.
So she screamed every curse she knew, spitting her anger into the snowstorm.
