Jet the parrot and the hen were perched on the big beanbag chair, happily watching a show on the tablet sitting on the small table in front of them.

Only the dog, Raven, didn’t seem interested in any kind of entertainment. He occasionally chewed on his ball, looking deep in thought.

Caroline often felt like Raven had something on his mind, but she could never figure out what it was.

Thanks to the firewood produced from her storage space, the room temperature had risen to over 40°F. In this frozen world, that counted as luxurylevel comfort.

Caroline pulled out some snacks from her storage space and shared them with Raven and Jet. She ate a bit herself, too. Just like that, the day slipped into night.

She hadn’t eaten any real meal that afternoonjust stuffed herself with snacks instead.

Potato chips, cookies, cream cake, spicy jerky sticks

She felt a little guilty afterward, but in all honesty, it felt amazing. It was pure stress relief.

Before bed, she played around with Raven and practiced a few combat moves with him. She soon realized that ever since Raven had evolved, not only could he change his size at will, but he had also become much faster and more agile.

Caroline curled her lips and said, Wow, you’re ridiculously talented. But that’s okayyou’re still my dog no matter what.

She gave

his big furry head a good rub, yawned, and went to bed.

The next morning, when Caroline woke up, she saw that the window glass was covered in thick frost.

The room was too warm, while the outside was cold.

She wiped away some of the fog and glanced at the thermometer outside.

The temperature read -40°F.

For comparison, coastal areas in South Pole usually stayed between 32°F and -4°F, while inland regions could reach -40°F to -60°F.

And now, this ordinary inland city she was living in had become just as cold as the South Pole

interior.

She couldn’t even imagine what the northern citiesor the actual North and South Poles- looked like now.

But Caroline knew it wasn’t over yet.

The temperature was still dropping.

At least, that’s what had happened in her previous life.

She poured herself a cup of hot tea, fed Raven and Jet, and decided to check her storage space.

She couldn’t stop thinking about the mutant white cat’s tail she’d thrown into the JunkEater yesterday.

When she got there, she noticed that the system had updated. Excited, she lifted the lid of the JunkEateronly to find it empty.

Caroline blinked twice. Her heart almost stopped.

What? Don’t tell me the storage space swallowed it again!

She clearly remembered seeing the cat’s tail go into the recycling system yesterday.

Frowning, she leaned closer and looked inside. Then she reached her hand in and felt around.

Her fingers brushed against something hard.

Her pulse quickened.

She’d used the JunkEater many times beforeit was always perfectly smooth inside, like polished metal. There shouldn’t be anything there.

Peering in, she saw something about the size of a coina small, black, buglike thing.

She carefully pulled it out and then froze. Soil beetles?

It was the same kind of round, hardshelled black beetle she used to see back in the countryside as a kid.

She’d heard they were valuable because of their medicinal properties.
