Before Caroline could keep studying her discovery, she suddenly heard Raven barking like crazy outside.
Startled, she rushed out of her storage space–and realized someone was knocking at the door.
When she opened it, she saw Tyler standing there.
His brows were furrowed, and Caroline had never seen him look this serious before.
“What’s wrong?” she asked.
Tyler’s voice was cold. “The government sent people here. They said they’re taking over our building to use as a new shelter.”
He paused, his expression darkening even more. “They also said it’s been approved by the Lowlands. Some of their people came with them.”
Caroline’s face immediately tightened.
She, Tyler, and the others grabbed their coats and went downstairs with Raven. Before leaving, they locked all the doors and double–checked every security measure. No one could break through the defenses of 66th floor in such a short time.
When they reached the ground floor, they saw two modified jeeps parked outside in the snow.
To Caroline’s surprise, she recognized one of the men who stepped out–Niko.
He used to be a lieutenant, but now he is a captain.
Since the apocalypse began, the military had managed to maintain order under strict discipline. Still, during rescue operations and shelter management, they had lost many soldiers to looters, raiders, and criminals.
Niko had earned several medals for bravery, and his quick rise in rank was well–deserved.
“Ms. Sinclair? What a coincidence,” Niko greeted the woman.
Then his gaze shifted to Raven. He looked puzzled. “That’s strange. All of our military dogs mutated–they’re as big as little ponies now. But Raven…
”
Caroline reached out and patted Raven’s head. The dog had shrunk himself back to his normal size. “He did get a little bigger,” she said casually. “But if he got any larger, I couldn’t afford to

feed him.”

That was partly true. Raven’s abilities were beyond ordinary, and she had no intention of revealing that to anyone.
Besides, Raven used to be a military dog. Even though he’d been retired, Caroline worried that if Niko knew what Raven could really do, they might try to take him back.
So, she wasn’t about to expose his power to anyone.
Niko chuckled lightly and nodded, his interest in Raven fading.
Then he turned his attention to the group in front of him.
Earlier, when they first arrived, one of his soldiers had used a loudspeaker to call up toward the building.
They’d announced that the government was taking over the place and asked the residents to come down and discuss arrangements.
But after yelling for a long time, nobody came down.
It had confused them. Usually, whenever survivors heard the government was there, they’d come running–grateful and excited.
So… what is going on with this building?
At that moment, one of the Lowlands men in the other jeep had grabbed the loudspeaker from the soldier and started shouting himself, his tone arrogant and mocking. He’d said the government had chosen this building as their next shelter and that it was handpicked by the Lowlands. He told everyone upstairs to be smart and move out quickly.
But when people finally came down, it was Caroline.
And the sight of her left him speechless.
She was clean, healthy–looking, and dressed in a thick mink coat. Her eyes were sharp and cautious, completely different from the soft–faced girl he remembered from before.
Niko’s gaze shifted briefly to the others.
The woman next to Caroline–her face scarred and plain–didn’t seem remarkable, but she clearly wasn’t starving or weak.
Then there was the man beside them.
