“What’s going on with the Lowlands?” she asked after taking a sip of her drink.

“Don’t play dumb. When you borrowed the car that day, you weren’t just going for a joyride, were you?” Caroline stared straight at him.

“Ms. Sinclair,” Tyler said evenly, “we all have our secrets. If you want to know mine, shouldn’t you share a few of yours first?”

Caroline’s eyes narrowed. “Mr. Lowland, what do you want to know?” Her tone stayed calm, though she could feel her heart beating faster.

“Who else lives in your apartment besides Raven? The first time I came knocking, someone else answered me from inside. Who was it?”

Tyler had been wanting to ask that question for a long time.

But with how unstable their relationship was after the apocalypse, he didn’t want to pry too much.

That question caught her off guard.

In her mind flashed Jet’s goofy face, and she almost laughed, remembering how Jet had talked to Tyler through the door back then.

“So,” Tyler continued, “are you married? Do you have a kid?”

Caroline almost said no–but then she thought of how Tyler had taken supplies from the 12th floor, chased her and Raven into the storage space, and kept giving her those curious looks, like he was trying to uncover her secrets.

Not to mention, he had destroyed that car she’d barely gotten to drive. He’d promised to get her a new one, sure, but she figured he owed her a little extra.

So she leaned back and said casually, “Yeah, I have a kid. But I’m not married. Guess that makes it a single–mom situation.”

She tilted her head. “Maybe Raven and I count as two people, you count as one, and Kay as one?”

For a moment, Tyler’s expression showed something between amusement and resignation.

Caroline grinned. “After all, when I first met you, you acted like such a big shot.” She winked at him playfully.

Keep pretending, Tyler, she thought. Let’s see when you finally drop the act.

She’d long suspected he wasn’t a retired soldier at all–that discharge certificate he showed was clearly fake.

Tyler gave her a faint, knowing smile. “Counting Raven as one person seems fair. You’ve got it rough with a kid to feed. We can go out again for supplies soon.”

Caroline rolled her eyes inwardly. This man’s way too calm.

Still, she’d gotten what she wanted, so she didn’t push further. “Alright, I told you my secret. Now it’s your turn. Where did you go when you borrowed the car that day?”

“I went to kill Patricia,” he said flatly.

Caroline froze, then let out a dry laugh. “Really? Then how come Harry showed up today with the government to take over this building? Mr. Lowland, sounds like your cleanup job wasn’t very thorough.”

Tyler chuckled lightly. “Ms. Sinclair, I went there to kill Patricia. I did. No one knows she’s dead, and I don’t care about anyone else involved.”

Caroline gave a slow nod and didn’t press further, She downed the rest of her drink, waved goodbye, and left.

She’d gotten what she came for.

First, she’d secured Raven’s share of supplies.

Second, she confirmed Patricia was really dead.
