When Niko asked her again, Erica burst into tears. She nodded like she was terrified and started making things up. “Yes! They pointed guns at my head and forced us to hand over all our supplies! They even killed my sick husband and laughed, saying they were helping him ‘end his pain.‘ They’re monsters! One of the men even tried to–tried to assault me… sob…”
She cried harder, clutching her blanket. “Zach and the others–they’re all working with the people on the 66th floor! The only reason they survived was that they killed everyone else! Captain Richter, you have to stand up for my husband, for all those innocent people who died, and for the regular folks who are about to move in!”
Niko frowned deeply.
He didn’t fully believe Erica’s story. But if there really were guns involved, he had no choice but to look into it.
After leaving Tyler’s place, Caroline went back to her own apartment. She knew things were about to get chaotic again, so she decided to use the time to make some pet food.
Raven’s appetite had become unbelievable lately. But dogs were omnivores–they couldn’t just eat meat all the time.
She still had some dry dog food stored, but it wasn’t nearly enough for a big eater like Raven. So she decided to make homemade dog biscuits.
As for Jet, her parrot, the bird food in her storage space was running low. Jet had also grown a lot, and his appetite had definitely increased, too.
So she decided to bake a batch of parrot food.
And since she also had other small animals in her storage space, she figured she might as well make some feed for them, too. That way, she wouldn’t have to use her storage’s energy reserves to feed them later.
Once she made up her mind, Caroline started working.
She began with Raven’s food first.
She took out pumpkins, carrots, chicken breast, beef, fish, broccoli, cornmeal, and sweet potato flour. She blended the big chunks into puree, mixed them with flour, shaped them into little biscuits, and steamed them.
Raven stayed close the whole time, following her everywhere.

Jet joined in the chaos, hopping onto the table. He pecked at the meat paste, then the flour, nibbling here and there until he’d eaten quite a bit.
Caroline had to keep adding more ingredients just to make up for what Jet stole.
At first, Raven didn’t mind sharing. But when Jet wouldn’t stop, Raven suddenly lunged and knocked him off the table.
Jet was instantly defeated.
Unfortunately, the mixing bowl on the table flipped too, dumping the entire batch onto the
floor.
The dough landed face–down, sticking flat against the tiles like a giant pancake.
“Jet! Raven! Both of you–go to the bedroom! Now!”
Caroline finally lost her temper.
The two troublemakers scampered away, tails and feathers down, leaving Caroline to clean up the mess. She salvaged what she could–cutting away the dusty parts and reusing the clean dough.
By the end of the day, she had steamed more than 20 batches of dog biscuits.
Raven immediately ate six of them—nearly half a batch.
Caroline was too tired to shape Jet’s food into neat little balls, so she just broke it into small pieces, figuring he could swallow them fine.
But when Jet tried the first one, he started choking and rolling his eyes dramatically.
Before Caroline could rush over to help, Raven pounced and stepped right on him.
Jet coughed up the piece instantly—but judging from his dazed look, Raven’s “help” nearly scared him half to death.
Caroline sighed and broke the dry bird food into even smaller bits.
“Yum! So good!!” Jet chirped happily after swallowing a few, flapping his wings and flying circles around the room.
Watching them, Caroline finally felt a little warmth in her heart.
She cleaned up her tools and thought that if she had time tomorrow, she’d make more.
