So Caroline and Tyler buried the food they couldn’t eat yet in a hidden spot that only they knew.
Later, when the time was right, they could trade it for other supplies.
The food left in the RV was enough to last the two of them and Raven for two years.
Once everything was done, Caroline and Tyler looked at the still–dark sky and hurried back to their apartment.
They told Raven to guard the RV for now and carried part of the supplies upstairs.
Before going up, Caroline quietly took out a bottle of spring water from her storage space while Tyler wasn’t looking and gave it to Raven.
Then she handed him a huge bone. “Hang in there, big guy. We’ll take care of your wounds soon. Just hold on.”
Raven wagged his tail hard, clearly forgetting about the pain as he happily gnawed on the bone.
Seeing how refreshed he looked after drinking the spring water, Caroline finally relaxed and patted his head.
But when she and Tyler each carried nearly 100 pounds of corn up to the 66th floor, they didn’t expect to see a thin figure standing by the door.
“Caroline, I … I finally got here with Lieutenant Richter’s truck. I came to apologize to Kay, but she won’t open the door for me. I’m freezing to death,” the girl said, sounding pitiful.
It was Freya–she had made it to the 66th floor.
Her eyes were locked on the big sacks of food in Caroline and Tyler’s hands, and she swallowed hard.
Freya had left on the government rescue ship, feeling so proud of herself.
She thought she was finally safe. But when she got there, she realized how awful things really
were.
Everyone was crammed into one big room with shared bunks. Stuff was piled everywhere- calling it crowded was an understatement.

The old man she had traveled with wasn’t feeling well to begin with, and he died that very night.
Now she was alone–young, pretty, with no supplies. Even the old man’s belongings were taken away by the government.
When she went to ask for them back, the officials told her to show proof of her relationship with the old man.
Blushing, Freya said she was his girlfriend, but nobody believed her.
Frustrated, she said, “Officer, if I wasn’t his girlfriend, why would I embarrass myself like this? Who would want to admit to dating an old, ugly man like him?”
The officer gave her a strange look and said, “Before the disaster, maybe not. But now? People would claim anyone as family for a bite of food.”
Freya froze. She almost blurted out that the old man was her godfather, but swallowed the words just in time.
She stormed back to her room, pale with anger. But when she got there, the place had changed.
She had chosen a bunk shared by women and kids, but now they were gone.
Instead, several greasy, middle–aged men sat on her bed, staring at her with hungry eyes.
“Hey, heard your boyfriend was older than us?” one of them, greasy–haired and dressed like a slob, asked with a creepy grin.
Freya turned to run, but one of them grabbed her.
The door slammed shut.
She tried to scream, but someone covered her mouth tightly.
A voice behind her chuckled. “Don’t bother yelling. No one’s gonna help you. There are only about 100 soldiers guarding 20 villas up here. Most of them are busy fixing things. You think anyone’s watching this house?”
Tears rolled down Freya’s face. She stopped struggling.
“Heh, smart girl,” one man said. “I’ll go easy on you.”
