Most rats evolved by breeding faster and faster. They ate anything and were incredibly smart. They were able to sneak in anywhere just to survive. The worst part was how they chose their new leader–by eating each other. It was just like those poison bugs trapped in a jar that fight until only one is left.
The rats ate one another, and through this brutal fight, a new king would emerge. The weaker ones were the first to fall. They lie aside, waiting for the new rat king to rise. The remaining few would battle it out, biting and devouring each other until only one was left–the one that had eaten the most, its belly swollen to bursting. That one would become the new rat king.
In no time, it could give birth to hundreds or even thousands of rats. The bodies of its dead kin would serve as food for its army.
Caroline stepped forward and shut the door of the grain warehouse. “This one’s useless now.”
Tyler frowned and nodded, saying nothing.
The two of them ran toward the last warehouse.
Inside, everything was still clean—the rats hadn’t gotten in yet. They quickly loaded supplies into the car and onto the inflatable rescue boat. They needed to move fast. Once the new rat king appeared, Caroline and Tyler would be in danger too.
When there was only about half a warehouse of food left, Tyler hesitated, clearly unwilling to leave it behind. But the car was packed full.
“Let’s take this load back first,” Caroline said. “We’ll come back if we can.”
Tyler nodded and went to start the car.
Caroline lagged behind a bit, pretending to move slowly. Once Tyler was gone, she secretly stored the rest of the beans in her storage space.
She had planned to store the rat king’s body too, but when she went to look, it was gone.
Startled, she looked around, thinking maybe someone was nearby. Then she spotted it—the rat king’s body lying in the back of the car where Tyler had tossed it.
“What are you doing with that?” Caroline asked. She was honestly kind of heartbroken.
Tyler clearly wanted it, and since he was the one who killed it, she didn’t want to argue.

“When we were fighting, I noticed its fur was tough, almost bulletproof. It’s probably warm too. I thought I’d make a vest out of it,” he said casually.
Caroline nodded. As long as he just needs the fur
“Then give me the meat,” she said quickly.
Tyler gave her a strange look.
“You’ve eaten rat meat before? It’s sour,” he said, sounding disgusted.
Caroline raised an eyebrow. He’s eaten rat meat before?
She didn’t ask. “It’s for Raven. I just want to give him a treat.”
“Alright,” Tyler said, nodding. “I’ll skin it and give you the meat.” Then he gave Raven a meaningful glance, as if saying, That dog’s not clean anymore.
Raven, who had already climbed into the rescue boat and was looking back toward them, had no idea his human had just sold him out.
When Caroline got back to the boat, Raven finally realized what had happened.
He was staring at her with sad puppy eyes, his head drooping. Caroline patted his big furry head. “Come on. I’ll cook you a huge pot of meat when we get home.”
Raven still looked pitiful, but his big tail started wagging. Just a little, but enough to show how happy he really was.
Caroline smiled. Yeah, keep pretending, you big wolf.
“Fine, two big pots, okay?” she said.
Raven’s tail wagged harder, but he kept his sulky look, eyes rolling up as if to say, Not enough! You ruined my reputation! I deserve more!
“Four pots,” Caroline said with a sigh. “Not one more!”
That did it. Raven’s mouth opened in a big grin, tail thumping even faster, his whole body practically glowing with joy.
