“Lieutenant Richter, Kay and I used to live on the same floor, and I know Caroline. Maybe I can help…”
Freya shamelessly lied that she and Kay were close, hoping to help Niko check whether the 66th floor had guns.
With that promise, she rode back to the apartments with Niko and escaped that disgusting shelter.
Niko was not a fool.
He ran the villas and knew a bit about Freya’s background.
He also knew she did come from the 65th floor of that apartment building.
So he agreed to her offer, but warned her seriously, “Ms. Lambert, let’s be clear. Guns are not a small matter. This concerns the safety of everyone in our new shelter. If you fail this task, or if you try to lie to me along with those people, remember–our unit has the power to execute.”
Freya shivered at once.
She had seen people die from soldiers‘ bullets these past days.
They shot troublemakers, looters, and thieves.
Niko was gentle with ordinary people.
But he had no mercy for those who disobeyed. First, you get a warning, then the next time, a bullet.
Niko’s men were not to be trifled with.
Only with that strict rule had things stayed under control.
Freya later thought, I wish I had gone to the soldiers and asked for help at the start when I was bullied. If I hadn’t given in and traded my body for favors, maybe my life would have turned out differently.
But it was too late for that now.
So she stood at the 66th–floor stairwell, watching the residents carry up so much food.

She thought about the shelter–how she had to trade her body for one more bite of food, and how those old men…
She stayed near the stairwell because she could feel warm air coming from inside.
There must’ve been good heating inside, because even the stairwell was much warmer than outside.
She stood there, not wanting to leave.
She kept thinking on the stairwell.
If I hadn’t stayed with Ivor’s group at first… If I hadn’t offended Kay…
If I could be accepted by Caroline like Kay was, could I live in a warm room with dignity and lots of food?
But now Caroline looked her up and down, snorted, and opened the door without even looking at her.
Seeing Caroline being so cold, ready to walk in with Tyler, she panicked and tried to grab her.
But her hand suddenly changed direction, and she ended up grabbing Tyler’s arm instead. “Please … can I come in to warm up? I stood outside all night–my legs are frozen. Please.”
As she said it, she bit her lower lip and tried to look pitiful.
This was her usual trick.
At the mountain shelter, it worked well on old men.
But Tyler’s brow tightened.
He hefted the heavy sacks of food onto one shoulder as if they were nothing.
Freya was stunned. She had never seen anyone so strong.
Tyler then shook his other hand and looked at the sleeve she had touched.
All his moves and his sour face said one thing–he felt that she was dirty,
