Chapter 169 A Surprise Question
Caroline couldn’t help but give Tyler a thumbs–up. She was seriously impressed.
Niko got chewed out, called stiff and inflexible.

“We need people right now, and you pissed off someone capable. How does that help us? You’re just too rigid; you don’t know how to adapt!” Nathaniel slammed his cane in anger.
Niko didn’t dare argue. He had reflected on it afterward.
Even his personal guard, Haroldson, had talked to him earlier.
“Boss, Raven is a good judge of character. We raised him properly from the start. He killed those lunatics for a reason. This is the apocalypse. Others don’t know, but we’ve got experts‘ predictions. Things won’t fix themselves quickly. Why’d you rush in with a gun?”
So now, he could only stand there and take Nathaniel’s lecture.
After a long while, he managed to say, “Commander Ball, that guy inside, Tyler … He was in special forces before, then he joined a mercenary group. He’s skilled and even has firearms. I just … I was thinking a new shelter would be built soon, and I didn’t want anything to go wrong.”
“In ancient times, they knew how to recruit the enemy! Your mind is so rigid. Why can’t you be flexible for once? If you use people well, they can be your right–hand man. But you just slammed the door shut. How are we supposed to negotiate with them now? You’re too stubborn. I don’t think you’re fit to be the commander here.
Niko’s heart sank at Nathaniel’s words.
He dared not say anything more, just bowed his head and listened.
Nathaniel sighed. “Since the apocalypse, you’ve been in charge of this shelter. You’ve never really felt what it’s like out there–food and clothes have never been a problem for you. But lately, there’s a swarm of mutant rats causing trouble in the neighboring city. Go help wipe them out, toughen up a bit, see how hard things really are, and how tough it is for the people out there. Once you finish off those mutant rats, I’ll call you back.”
Niko dared not refuse and quickly saluted. “Yes, sir!”
Caroline and Tyler watched Niko go inside, then casually headed upstairs.
They didn’t talk much along the way.

But Caroline could clearly tell Tyler was in a good mood–he must have felt proud of his “tattling” earlier.
Actually, Caroline had never fully understood Tyler.
Especially today, she learned his true identity.
He had been expelled from special forces for not following orders, then joined a mercenary
group.
Plus, his mother’s family was powerful, making him a typical rich kid.
But during her time with him, Caroline had only noticed one real trait―he liked spicy food.
Other traits were mostly what he wanted her to see.
It was like everything Tyler did was calculated, but also totally impulsive.
“Is your kid okay?”
She didn’t expect this to be Tyler’s first question to her.
Caroline, lost in thought, almost choked on her spit. “Ah, yeah, he’s fine. It’s warm at home, and he has enough to eat.”
Tyler didn’t ask more, and they kept walking.
After a while, he said, “Do you need kids‘ clothes or baby formula?”
Caroline thought, Why is Tyler suddenly being so nice?
She looked back at him and noticed a smile in his eyes.
Those little canine teeth showed again.
Caroline felt a jolt. Crap. He’s onto me, and he’s just messing with me on purpose.
“He’s a parrot, right?” Tyler murmured.
Caroline didn’t bother hiding anymore. She had only said she had a kid to tease Tyler and to get Raven some leverage.
So now she admitted, “Yeah, a parrot.”
“Ms. Sinclair, you’re pretty funny.”
