Chapter 239 Welcome Back

On the other side, Heidi woke to sharp, stabbing pain in her fingers and toes.

At first, she was just glad to be alive. But that feeling didn’t last long.

She quickly realized she was somewhere strange, surrounded by endless squeaks and scurrying noises.

Opening her eyes, she met countless pairs of blood–red eyes staring back at her.

Looking down, she saw her mangled, bloody fingers and toes being gnawed on by huge rats.

“Ahhh!” she screamed in fear.

Before she could even breathe, a massive snow–white rat leapt from behind and tore her head clean off.

A swarm of rats poured in, drinking her blood and devouring her insides.

Meanwhile, Tyler was driving away from the warehouse where he and Caroline had battled mutant rats, killed the rat king, and witnessed the birth of a new one.

No one knew how many rat kings had been replaced or how many unlucky people had come looking for food after Caroline and the others left–only to end up as dinner for those mutant

rats.

Honestly, it was the perfect end for a cruel woman like Heidi. She was gone completely, not a single scrap left.

When Caroline returned to her apartment on the 66th floor, she stepped into the hallway and immediately saw Denton. He was wearing an apron, holding a spatula, and grinning. “Caroline! Dinner is ready. Just waiting on you!”

Francis, dressed casually, was happily gnawing on a chicken drumstick. He waved her in. “Come eat. This kid might look young, but he can cook.”

He didn’t seem out of place at all.

Tyler appeared as well, giving Caroline a soft smile. “Welcome back.”

For the first time in years, she felt that rare sense of being home.

While Denton prepared one last dish, Caroline slipped away to feed Raven.

After shifting forms and racing through the snow all day, he had to be starving.

As she entered, a pitiful wail reached her cars. “Human, you finally remembered to come back.”

Looking down, she saw Jet staring up at her with watery eyes.

Caroline gently patted his little head, praising him for guarding the house so well again.

But Jet just tilted his head, clearly ignoring her words.

After a long, awkward pause, he shuffled closer. “Human, you’re having a dinner party, right? Take me with you!”

Caroline raised an eyebrow. How did he even know about dinner?

“Raven told me,” Jet said. “He said we’re going to Silver’s place. Let me tag along.”

Realizing what had happened, Caroline marched over and grabbed Raven’s ear mid–munch. “Raven!”

Apparently, Raven had filled Jet in.

Caroline was heading next door for a feast, so Jet was determined to come along–hoping he might catch a glimpse of Silver, whom he clearly had a crush on. Raven fully supported the idea.

In Raven’s opinion, Silver wasn’t just good–looking and faster than Jet, but she’d also been trained by Denton, a real mercenary. She was way more competent than Jet.

Jet puffed out his chest and repeated all of that proudly.

Caroline felt like slamming her head against the wall.

“Jet, Silver is way out of your league. Even if you married her, you’d just be mooching!”

But Jet stuck his chest out even more. “Raven says, not to let good things go to outsiders. Who cares who leans on whom? We take advantage where we can!”
