“Hmph, the Lowlands truly have some nerve, huh? Messing with Commander Ball? Do they truly think Commander Zimmer can protect them?”

Denton had whipped up a huge dinner spread.

There were ham hocks, roasted chicken, Cajun–style spicy fish, quiche, barbecue ribs, and roasted salted peanuts.

But the real hit of the night? The simple bowl of cucumbers with dip that Caroline brought.

Even Tyler, usually so composed, sneaked a few bites when no one was watching.

“This cucumber is amazing. Did you grow it hydroponically?” Francis asked, shoving in a mouthful.

Caroline smiled and nodded. “Sort of.”

The cucumbers were grown hydroponically and watered with healing spring water.

Even Tyler was running low on fresh vegetables by that point.

He’d set up a hydroponic rack himself. But with the cold, growth was painfully slow.

Caroline had brought some racks from Nathaniel earlier and promised Tyler she’d share once her veggies were ready. Lately, she’d even given him a few peppers.

But looking at the table, she could tell that even Tyler’s fancy food stash was running low.

The table was packed with meat!

Francis hadn’t come empty–handed either. He brought some meat and asked Denton to whip up barbecue ribs.

But the moment he spotted Caroline’s cucumbers, he attacked them like they were a long–lost treasure, crunching nonstop.

For a while, the only sound, aside from a few side comments, was the steady munching of cucumbers. If Caroline hadn’t known better, she might’ve thought she’d walked into a rabbit convention.

She wasn’t craving veggies. She had plenty stocked in her storage space, so she stuck to the meat dishes instead.

Denton’s cooking was top–notch. At just 17, he had a seriously bright future.

By the time dinner ended, no one but Caroline had really touched the meat dishes. Aside from

a few bites before she served the cucumbers, the only thing that completely disappeared was that big bowl of cucumbers. Everything else was barely touched.

Denton nearly cried. “Seriously? I bust my butt all night, and Caroline’s cucumbers stole the show!”

Caroline just snickered and patted his shoulder. Losing a little storage space was hardly a real loss.

After dinner, everyone was stuffed and ready for a nap.

With nothing better to do, Denton decided to wander around the shelter to get some exercise.

His fever was gone, his wounds all patched up. After applying some healing ointment, he was bouncing around like a monkey. Being so young and cooped up by that criminal gang for days probably made it impossible for him to sit still.

Tyler knew Denton could handle himself, so he didn’t worry too much. He just reminded him not to overdo it or risk reopening his wounds, then went to bed.

When Caroline got home, Jet ran up to her, all excited. He wanted to know if Silver looked pretty today.

“Yeah, she looked great,” she said, feeling a little helpless. What kind of lovesick little bird was that?

She ignored the two pets, freshened up, closed the curtains, and lay down for a nap.

But after just two hours, a commotion outside woke her.

That was rare.

Ever since the shelter was set up, nobody had dared come up to the 66th floor looking for trouble. It had been ages since anyone even tried to mess with them.

Raven showed up at Caroline’s bedroom door, grumpy from being woken up, while Jet shouted from the living room, “Shameless people are here!”
