Denton was furious, practically bouncing mad. But he couldn’t explain anything, and his face

flushed red.

He was about to draw his gun. But seeing everyone watching, he knew that if he didn’t clear things up, he’d be stuck with this mess. That made him even angrier inside.

Tyler stood off to the side, calm and cold. When Caroline arrived, he let out a relieved sigh. “You’re way better at arguing than I am.”

The hint was obvious–he wanted Caroline to deal with it.

Caroline was speechless.

Seriously? We just started getting close, and now you’re dumping this on me?

Tyler could tell what she was thinking and smirked. “I saw you liked Denton’s roasted chicken. I’ll have him make you two more plates later as a thank–you.”

Caroline couldn’t deny Denton’s chicken was good–tender and flavorful.

Without another word, she walked over to Zelene, who was bawling on the ground. She flicked her wrist and pressed a silver knife to Zelene’s throat. “Spill the truth, or you’ll bleed today. My little brother’s only 17—he’s a kid. If you’re trying to scam someone, at least pick the right target.”

To Caroline’s surprise, Zelene’s eyes darted around and landed on Tyler, as if she thought he’d work just as well. And she didn’t seem scared of the knife at all.

“Oh wow, this is unreasonable! He slept with my daughter, and now you want to kill her? If you’ve got the guts, slice my neck!”

The woman nearby suddenly lunged at Caroline, trying to shove her away.

But Caroline had been training hard. Her reflexes were back to their old selves. That half- starved woman didn’t stand a chance.

She lifted her leg. As the woman barreled into her, she gave a hard kick that sent the woman flying.

With a sick thud, the woman hit the stair railing behind them and split her head open.

But she didn’t stop. She rolled over and screamed even louder, “Murder! She’s killing me!”

Zelene started crying as well. “I don’t wanna live anymore! He slept with me–fine, whatever, i don’t even care about my reputation! But they actually hit my mom!”

She dabbed at her face between sobs.

More people in the crowd joined in, yelling that the 66th–floor folks were always unreasonable and had even killed people before.

A gunshot cut through the noise, and everything went silent.

Caroline had fired into the wall.

She fixed her gaze on the crowd, especially the front row of women led by Zelene–the one accusing Denton.

Zelene was young, even younger than Caroline, but her eyes flicked around like she was plotting something. She didn’t look innocent at all.

The middle–aged women around her looked wary and calculating.

What truly bothered Caroline was how clean their clothes were.

Every coat looked brand new–fresh cotton, no dirt.

Caroline had seen the shelters below. Even with military assistance, things got filthy. Those jackets couldn’t be that clean unless they’d just received them.

Something didn’t add up.

What annoyed her most was their claim that Denton had gone into Zelene’s room and threatened everyone to stay out first.

Caroline just laughed. “You’re saying my little brother slept with your daughter? Don’t be ridiculous. With how she looks, Denton wouldn’t even glance her way if she were naked.”
