But what the hell was he after?

Just then, Tyler came up behind her. “Feels like a distraction.”

No sooner had he said that than a deafening boom came from the direction of Building B.

Caroline rushed to the nearest window.

From there, she saw a helicopter descending above Building B.

Painted across the body of the chopper was a wild black dragon, stretching from nose to tail.

The moment Tyler saw the emblem, his face went dark. “Damn. Got careless.”

None of them had expected that the entire setup was just to keep Tyler from noticing the chopper closing in.

They were 66 stories up, and in this dead–silent apocalypse, even the roar of a car starting downstairs could be heard clearly from the top floor, let alone the approach of a helicopter.

The world was just that quiet now.

No entertainment. No cars or people moving through the streets. No TVs, no computer noises.

It was so still, you could almost hear the snow falling.

Looking out the window, Caroline saw the chopper landing on the rooftop of the building across from them.

A few people climbed out, and a few more were already waiting on the roof, as if they were there to receive them.

It was too far to make out any faces, but Caroline noticed one of them was a woman, whose long hair swayed in the wind.

Judging by her build, she looked like the woman leading the group in Building B.

They seemed to have noticed the commotion coming from Building A. After exchanging a few words, the group began moving toward the edge of the rooftop facing Caroline’s building.

Then, the long–haired woman and one of the men who had just stepped off the helicopter stopped at the very edge of the roof, staring across.

Tyler and Denton stepped up beside Caroline, looking out the window and locking eyes with the people across the gap.

Denton muttered, “No way. Obsidian Fang’s still alive?”

In the apocalypse, just having a working vehicle meant you were a serious player.

And now these people had a damn helicopter.

They didn’t stick around for long. After they left, Caroline learned more from Denton.

Obsidian Fang was a known name. Another mercenary, just like them. But his crew belonged to a rival faction that had always clashed with Tyler’s group, the Black Sword Mercenary Group.

“If Tyler had spotted that chopper earlier, he would’ve taken it down for sure. Damn it, this is all on me. I shouldn’t have gone wandering off like that.”

Later, Denton explained why he’d even gone out in the first place. He’d been about to cook when he heard someone shouting downstairs about a mutant pigeon. They’d been yelling about it for ages, and curiosity finally got the better of him.

Denton didn’t have many hobbies, but he was obsessed with pigeons.

So yeah, the whole thing had been a setup. They’d picked the perfect moment to cause a distraction and make their move.
