Caroline racked her brain, but she couldn’t recall anything about a group called Obsidian Fang from her previous life. They must not have made much of a splash back then.

Not wanting to get dragged into whatever was going on, she told the others that she was heading out that evening too. In reality, she was planning to recover the stash of supplies Harry had left behind. It wasn’t just Harry who knew about it, his two bodyguards were in on it too. If she waited too long, someone else might get to it first.

After that, Caroline lay down for a bit more sleep. When she got up, she drank some spring water, and immediately felt refreshed and alert. Once the sun started to go down, she got ready to head out.

But just as she was leaving–when she reached the 65th floor–Haroldson, one of Niko’s guys, showed up, and he wasn’t empty–handed. He’d brought exactly what Caroline had been waiting for these past few days, the corpse of a mutant cockroach.

“Caroline! I brought Raven a gift!” Haroldson beamed, proudly waving what looked like a drumstick. It was all shriveled and wrinkled, like he’d been carrying it in his coat for days.

Raven’s head suddenly popped out from behind Caroline. His ears shot up, and his cold, piercing eyes locked onto the drumstick in Haroldson’s hand.

Caroline gave Raven a pat on the head and rolled her eyes—what, had she been starving him lately? This was embarrassing.

“Raven, come here! Got a drumstick for you,” Haroldson said, crouching down and grinning as he waved him over.

Raven wagged his tail as he walked over to Haroldson, clearly recognizing him. But to

everyone’s surprise, even though he was clearly dying for it, Raven didn’t take the drumstick from Haroldson’s hand. Instead, his icy blue eyes locked onto Caroline, as if asking, “Human, can I eat this?”

Haroldson chuckled at the sight and said to Caroline, “You’ve really raised Raven well. He won’t even touch food from someone else without your permission.”

Caroline snapped out of her thoughts. He was right. She hadn’t even noticed when it started, but Raven had pretty much stopped eating anything unless it came from her.

Earlier that day, Denton had thought Raven looked interesting and tried to offer him a chunk of pork shank. Raven hadn’t even glanced at him, just turned around and walked back into the room. Meanwhile, Snow–the other dog they were fostering–had happily trotted over, pawed

At the time, Caroline figured maybe Raven just wasn’t familiar with Denton. But now, watching him shake his tail excitedly while staring at her with those urgent eyes, she couldn’t help but laugh. “Human, human, can I eat it? Can I?” his gaze practically begged.

Sighing, Caroline took the drumstick from Haroldson and held it out to Raven. Raven snatched it up and devoured it in just a few bites, licking his lips when he was done like he was still savoring the flavor.

Then he looked up at Caroline with those hopeful eyes again, clearly saying, “That was pretty good. Maybe next time bring me a few more?”

But he seemed to realize a moment later that his eagerness might’ve ruined his image. So he quickly shut his mouth, puffed out his chest, and stood tall at her side, trying to look like a proper little guardian again.

Haroldson laughed, reaching out to pat Raven on the head. “Seeing Raven doing this well really makes me happy. We lost a few of our own mutant dogs back in the unit … ”

As he said that last part, a bit of sorrow crept into his voice.

He looked like he wanted to keep talking, but Caroline was short on time and didn’t stick

around to chat.

Haroldson didn’t say anything more, and instead called a few people over to help move the mutant corpses they’d brought back from the front lines up to the 65th floor.

Caroline took a quick look, most of them were mutant cockroaches, with a few bags full of mutant rats. They looked nasty, sure, but the thought of upgrading her storage space made her feel pretty satisfied.

Since there were too many people around right now, Caroline didn’t put them into her storage space immediately. Instead, she said goodbye to Haroldson and headed out, planning to collect Harry’s stash first and deal with the mutant corpses later.

Just as she was leaving, Haroldson hesitated, like he had something more to say. Caroline could tell just by the look on his face that he had something he wanted to say to her.

“Caroline, there’s something I want to talk to you about. I’ll be here overnight, could you come find me on the 40th floor when you get back?” he asked.

Caroline raised an eyebrow. “What’s it about?”
