Chapter 248 You Talk Too Much
So Harry had been experimenting on mutant animals.
But the way he was doing it–it was beyond brutal.

Caroline even spotted a dissected mutant female dog that had been pregnant. The researchers had sliced her open, pulled each of the unborn pups out one by one, and laid them across the metal table.
The pups had all been dissected too, lined up neatly like specimens.
The mother dog’s lifeless eyes stared up at the ceiling, and in them, Caroline could still see the shimmer of a tear. She’d died in agony, clearly unwilling to go.
“This is a lab?” Caroline muttered, horrified.
The man didn’t fire again. Instead, he clenched his jaw and snapped, “Yeah, it’s a lab. The Lowlands‘ private research facility. Harry’s lab. My advice? Get out while you still can. People from the Lowlands will be here any minute.”
But as he spoke, his voice wavered.
Caroline wasn’t buying it.
He clearly didn’t know Harry was already dead or that the Lowlands were finished.
He was probably just one of the researchers Harry had hired, someone who’d been living here full–time, isolated.
And judging by the blood on his hands, she didn’t even want to imagine how many animals he’d tortured.
Then Caroline noticed something else, the man kept glancing at Raven. Again and again, his eyes flicked toward the dog beside her.
“Heh
…
you can go, but that fat mutt stays. Ice–blue eyes like that? Bet he’s got some kind of ability, huh?” the man said with a twisted grin.
The disgusting bastard was actually trying to take Raven from her.
“Of course, the Lowlands would offer you something in return. Take that dog of youfs, we’ll give you a hundred pounds of food for him. That’s a lot, huh? Way more useful than a few pounds of dog meat,” the man said, trying to sound confident.

He even pointed toward the corner of the lab. “There, just leave the dog and go help yourself to the food. You won’t find a better deal than that.”
Right then, Caroline’s eyes landed on one of the dissected mutant dog corpses laid out on a metal table.
Next to it sat a collar. It had clearly belonged to a pet–someone’s dog.
“You’ve done this before, haven’t you? Traded food for people’s pets?” she asked coldly.
The man, completely missing the tone in her voice, puffed up proudly. He thought she was actually considering it. He lifted his other hand and gestured toward the row of animal
corpses.
Most of them were cats and dogs, but there were also parrots, guinea pigs, even a few hamsters.
“All of these. Come on, it’s the apocalypse. Who’s still getting sentimental over pets? That dog of yours is a great specimen. A hundred pounds of food is a damn good offer. Don’t get greedy, the Lowlands aren’t some pushover group you can just—”
Bang. A gunshot cut him off mid–sentence. The man dropped with a cry, clutching his shoulder where the bullet had hit.
“You–You bitch!” he yelled, lifting his gun to fire back.
But before he could even touch the trigger, a black blur slammed into him. Raven. The dog’s jaws clamped down on the man’s wrist with a sickening crunch, ripping straight through bone.
Blood sprayed as Raven yanked hard, tearing the hand clean off. He gave a quick shake of his head and spat both the pistol and the severed wrist onto the floor. One hundred pounds of food for me? What a joke.
The man clutched his bleeding stump, sweat pouring down his face.
But at that moment, he didn’t care about the pain. Not when he was staring at the pair in front of him, a girl and her dog. Two walking nightmares.
The man staggered to his feet, grabbing a scalpel off the table.
“I–I can give you all the food stored here! I’ve got the keys to the other two warehouses next door too! Take whatever you want–just spare me, please!” he begged, eyes wide with fear.
Caroline glanced around at the animal corpses on the tables and the helpless creatures still being electrocuted mid–experiment. Her lips curled slightly. “Sorry. You talk too much.”
