Chapter 35 Raven’s Rescue
Just as Caroline raised her arm to block, a shadow darted past her and knocked the object away.
A deep thudding sound came from right beside her.

Caroline looked down and froze. The thing that almost hit her was a metal–framed signboard from the nearby yoga studio.
It read in big bold letters: Graceflow Yoga.
The outside was fabric, but the frame inside was solid steel.
If that thing had hit her, she didn’t even want to imagine the outcome.
And the one who had jumped to save her was Raven.
Raven was still standing, but one of his legs was raised off the ground.
His paw hung limp. It was clear he was hurt.
“Oh! Raven! You saved me!”
Caroline’s eyes filled with hot tears.
She had seen all kinds of betrayal in her past life–people scheming, lying, and killing to survive.
Reese and Jonathan had both died because of their greed.
But no one had ever protected her like this. No one.
Her chest tightened at this thought. Without thinking, she bent down and lifted Raven into her arms.
He was heavy, well over a hundred pounds now, all solid muscle.
Raven looked confused, clearly not used to being held like that.
But Caroline wouldn’t let him move. “Don’t move,” she said softly. “Mom’s taking you home.”
The word “Mom” slipped out before she could stop it. It felt strange, yet right. In that moment, she didn’t care how it sounded. She was Raven’s mom now.
Raven seemed to understand. He stopped struggling and stayed completely still.
Caroline carried him through the raging wind and pounding rain, step by step, until they reached the front entrance of her apartment complex.
The moment they stepped inside, the storm was shut out behind the glass doors. Caroline finally set Raven down and took a deep
breath.
She felt like she’d just survived a disaster.
Looking back through the glass, she saw how the world outside had changed.

Chapter 35 Raven’s Rescue
The wind bent the trees almost to the ground. Branches snapped and flew through the air.
One had crushed an electric scooter.
From Caroline’s angle, the person seemed fine–he was already standing up, thank goodness.
But the signs placed outside the stores were now flying wildly through the air, dangerously spinning like blades.

Some cyclists had stopped trying to ride altogether. They got off their bikes, pushing them carefully, or ran to find shelter from the
storm.
Yet Caroline knew there was no escaping it.
The wind and rain would only grow stronger.
And soon, the acid rain would fall.
Apocalypse was truly coming.
When Caroline got home, she checked Raven’s paw right away.
After going through countless sprains and injuries during the apocalypse, she was practically a half–trained doctor herself.
A quick touch was enough for her to tell if there was a dislocation or a fracture.
Thankfully, nothing was broken. Raven had only twisted its paw a bit.
It probably happened when he slammed into the signboard. His paw must’ve hit at the wrong angle.
Caroline finally breathed a sigh of relief after a thorough examination.
An hour later, when the weather cleared up a little, she geared up again and went outside to retrieve the solar charging panel she had left behind.
Looking at the small delivery box, she slapped it twice and grumbled, “This is all your fault and my dumb brain! Poor Raven got hurt because of it!”
Back inside, she turned on the radio to check the local news while treating Raven’s paw.
