Caroline planned to unpack and sort everything later when she got home.

To her surprise, when she reached the second floor, she found a small room packed with delivery staff uniforms, heavy coats, vests,
and work shoes.
They didn’t look great, but they were thick, durable, and windproof–perfect for surviving the apocalypse.
It looked like the delivery company had ordered new uniforms for their workers but hadn’t handed them out yet.
Caroline didn’t waste time checking. A quick glance told her most were men’s sizes, in all kinds of fits.
She wasted no time and stored everything in her storage space.
After clearing the first and second floors, she continued upward. The next levels, from the third to the twelfth, were full of live- streaming companies, online resellers, and food distributors.
Knowing time was short, Caroline led Raven straight to the third floor.
Raven stayed close and quiet, following her closely. The big dog didn’t bark or wander. He was sharp and alert.
Caroline had been to this floor before.
It was mostly small streaming studios, each filled with shelves of products.
Just as she reached the top of the stairs, Raven suddenly grabbed the hem of her pants with his teeth.
Startled, Caroline turned to face him.
The dog’s eyes were wide and focused on something ahead, his whole body tense and ready to attack.
Caroline understood. Someone was here.
She quickly turned off her flashlight and pulled Raven back a few steps, slipping into a small room.
It looked like a janitor’s closet–narrow, empty, and bare.
The plain setup told her one thing: there was nothing worth stealing here, which meant no one would bother searching it.
Caroline pressed herself and Raven deeper into the corner. Her ear was close to the door, paying close attention to the outside.
Sure enough, within 30 seconds, she heard footsteps approaching.
Along with them came the scraping sound of something being dragged and the faint glow of a flashlight sweeping across the hall.
Her heart tightened. Could it be someone like her? Someone who already knows what’s coming and was out collecting supplies?
With a thought, her knife appeared in her hand.
Her muscles tensed. If this person tried anything against her, she would fight him.
Luckily, the person seemed to be done collecting supplies. When they reached the stairway, they went straight downstairs.

Caroline listened as the footsteps faded into the distance. Then she turned to Raven, who had already relaxed beside her. She finally let out a quiet sigh of relief.
Caroline knew that once that guy reached the first and second floors and saw every room stripped bare, he’d be shocked.
Hopefully, he’d assume a large group had come through already, get spooked, and back off.
She waited quietly in the dark. After a while, she crept toward the window of a nearby room and peeked out. Down below, a shadowy figure stepped through the doorway, carrying a huge pack on his back. Caroline finally let out a small sigh of relief.
Even from this distance, she could tell–he was tall. At least six feet tall, maybe more.
He had broad shoulders and a strong build. The oversized black coat he wore couldn’t hide the muscles beneath.
The way he carried that heavy pack through the floodwater with ease showed that he wasn’t an ordinary person.
She couldn’t see his face, but that body alone was easy to recognize.
If she saw him again, she’d know immediately.
Caroline frowned slightly. That guy was trouble. She needed to be careful if their path ever crossed.
